Day 19. 23 km/14.5 miles today. A little easier after yesterdays ascent and descent. We left Molinaseca with nothing open for breakfast/coffee, but were rewarded after the 4 mile walk into Pontferrada with the best coffee on the Camino and a waffle (gofre) with strawberry sauce and whipped cream! We're going to have to reel in our eating when we get home and aren't walking 15-20 miles per day! Pontferrada is a larger town with a medieval castle built by the Templar Knights, who protected the pilgrims in the middle ages. Then we walked through the Bierzo region with beautiful vineyards surrounded on all sides by mountains. Our Colombian priest friend started his Camino 5 days ago. We either end up staying at the same place or see him on the Way every day. The day before, his knee was hurting, and yesterday his knee and ankle were hurting, and he was walking with a stick he had found. We asked at the place where we stayed last night if there was a store where we could buy him some trekking poles, and the woman at the desk gave us a pole that someone had left. All day today we carried the pole, looking for Freddy. We were uncertain where we would stay, but decided on a place that was convenient. As we were checking in, we heard Freddy's voice! He had fallen today, and now his ankle is sprained. But we were able to give him a pole to help him continue. It's really crazy how we keep seeing people on the Camino who you think you'll never see again--and also cool how everyone helps each other.
