Arrived in Izmir, pop 3 million, with a beautiful harbour like Wellington, but much larger. Many Syrian refugees living in the parks, hoping for a boat ride to Greece. Weather continues warm and clear 35C. Highlight of today was the visit to Ephesus (see photo of library). Felt the New Testament come to life as both Paul and Peter lived here for some time the latter dying here at age 105. Not so sure about Mary but she probably lived and died here too. This city remained Christian even under the Ottomans and there is little overt sign of Muslim orthodoxy as we strolled the streets, few headscarves, not so many mosques, and I have not heard the call to prayer this morning even though the window is wide open. The harbour resembles Wellington, but on a much grander scale with a large sheltered bay surrounded by hills, even a ferry shuttling from one side to the other. A very liveable place!
