Train up to Miskolc today, we hadn’t pre booked so it was up to us what time we got there, definitely packed too much don’t like seeing dad carry the bags and he won’t let me pick it up from that silly back operation I had a while back…
Anyways train station was very easy to reach from metro and we got a ticket fairly easy and very cheap to Miskolc, a pastry and coffee and sat on the train, the very warm train to the next stop.
The train was pleasant and only two hours. We could have got the tram from the train station to our apartment but that’s too easy so we walked 2km with the wheels cases in the boiling hot weather (again) to our place. Looked a little dodgy from outside but was fairly nice inside only no lift just stairs and we of course were on the top level haha.
The lady was still cleaning who didn’t speak any English so that was hard work but we dropped our kit off and went out to the town to activate our Miskolc passes and get some information in the tourist centre, she was very helpful but I couldn’t look at her too long without being a cow, the teeth situation was making me feel a little weasy. She gave us some good tips!
For today we looked around the lovely little town which was very quiet and again the same as Budapest, everyone eating ice cream. They’re obsessed by it here! Going to have to get in on the craze!
More churches and chapels and heroes squares, all well and good until they want a donation and mum whips out her card! Haha the look on the faces! They’re hard faced here, quiet but bloody grumpy. We did all our sight seeing and knew it was time for a refreshment. In the sun and by the river, it’s criminal to leave it!
The beers went down delightful, and of course the pickles! We scouted out our place for dinner tonight a real Hungarian with a wine cellar recommended by the tourist information centre. The place was old fashioned reminded me of an old medieval castle.
We went back, went into the Spar (with an R) got some water and beers to go back shower and chill for a little while.
When it was time to go back out, the sun was still around but it had gotten colder into the evening. My dress sandals, long body warmer and scarf took some looks haha!
The place was empty except one other couple, dark and dingy and the waitresses didn’t really speak English. When we asked for the cellar tour the guy had gone and the Hungarian waitress who spoke no English walked us through a door into a long cave tunnel turned the lights on and walked away. I guess this was a self guided tour! Haha! The place stunk, was creepy and weird and had the LARGEST wine glass I’d ever set my eyes on. Very weird but we could stop laughing! The wine menu was no clearer after this so our options was dry white wine, semi dry white wine and the same for red haha! Choose wisely…
Food was delicious! I had boar, was a little scared as dad and mum said it came out like pork and not up to that but it looked more like beef! Couldn’t eat it all but we got all we wanted for dinner and we proceeded to desert, delicious but unlike us to have desert, very naughty on the waste line!
The long and winding road back to the apartment (all of 1km) cold and very quiet. This place is sleepy town! Another good day!
22nd April
Miskolctapolca Barlangfürdő és Barlang Aquaterápia (natural thermal cave baths) this was one of the main reasons for coming up here. The natural thermal spa in a cave! A free bus ride with our pass up to the caves and our ticket included in our pass for the entrance.
Not so wow from outside the pools seemed to be closed for renovation which was disappointing but when going inside, WOW! The cave entrance for the pool looked awesome. We went upstairs to get changed and came down the stairs inside the pool area. Not prepared as we used our apartment towels and no slippers, the pool wasn’t particularly warm in face it was rather cold. We walked through the cave different lights for ambiance. The natural springs with the sulphur build up on them looked cool, the pools got warm as we got further into the cave as we were clearly getting closer to the springs. Different crevices with lightings and temperatures and smells. It was peaceful until the kids came in. The Saunas were closed and the outside so if this wasn’t the case I’m sure it would have been a lot more peaceful and quiet!
We spent around 2/3 hours in there before getting changed and having a coffee outside in the sun.
We were going to stroll back through the parks and river side before getting a bud into the main town. It was so lovely in the parks and grassy areas. Mum had her ice cream fix, it was too much hassle for me to pull my liners out of my mouth again so I didn’t bother. I’ll be 6 stone soaking wet by the time these things come out because I can’t be bothered to eat with them lol.
The bus we caught from the Tesco on outside of Miskolc into the centre took us to the Pannon Sea museum, which I thought would have been more about the thermal natural springs but more so about dinasours and the environment which was still interactive and interesting but a lot of information to take in. As soon as you say the word museum to mum she starts yawning, now she knows how I feel when she mentions the word shopping. Haha!
We didn’t stop for a beer, we got back had one or two in the apartment and got back out for one in the lovely little street in the sun! In the sun and fresh air!! Lovely!!
We went for tapas to Zipps brewery and tapas bar tonight, it was fairly decent all the tapas was on the ciabatta bread with different toppings, not a big dinner but it did the trick!
Mum was tipsy, and very funny she got all the tooth paste up her nose, what a bloody giggle!
