Feeling the benefit of another early night to bed and a good lie in, we decide not to check out today but instead to go into town as we didn't quite get there yesterday.
Along the way the thatchers are making good progress on the rooves of a new housing estate, strange to see the old ways on a new development. Further on we pass a field of tiny jonquils, all brilliant yellow in the midday sun. There are also a few lavish properties with perfect lawns and shrub gardes, bridges over their own little dykes and one garden with statues and a woman clipping formal box hedges.
It's as well we turned back yesterday, the town centre is a good way further than we could have gone, but we cross the canal and are soon in the centre.
Small shops sit under pointed rooves and there are bike racks every few yards. Bikes outnumber cars by a large margin in the town, making it unusually quiet, and not without hazard as bikes and skater have right of way everywhere.
We sit in the main square opposite the white, brick church, outside a cafe-bar and order coffee. The sun is warm and a few people are in tee shirts. Food is being delivered to other tables so we decide to have lunch here. The small portion burgers are just right as we soak up the warmth.
After lunch there is a short trip next door to the Dirk supermarket. No surprises; fresh veg, processed meats and sausages and cheeses fill up half the store, but our milk, orange juice and fruit tartlets are soon through the till and freedom beckons outside.
Ali visits the Tourist Info and gets some pamphlets and it's time to leave this pleasant and orderly little town and head back. Just like yesterday there is a cold breeze across the plain and by the time we get to the site we are frozen, but the sun has made the van really warm inside and a fresh cup of tea makes it better.
After promising for the last three days we finally spend a bit of time outlining a route for the next week.
