Last night it rained, really rained. It rained so much that on one side of us the rugby pitch was waterlogged and on the other side, just over the wall, the Calcium Cup match between the Ribcage Rhinos and the Tibia Tigers had to be postponed. Anyway at least the skylights are clean.
We refuel across the road and start another long drive to get us well on our way north.
We start out through the national park, Landes De Gascogne, flat straight roads through pine forest. At one point we are overtaken by a Citroen Traction Avant, a 1930s car made famous in the Maigrait detective films. We are doing 55mp when he passes us and soon he is out of sight. A 1940s Simca follows us for a while until we stop at a boulangerie in Sabres for bread and almond croissants. From Bordeaux it's a familiar route for us and much of it on roads we travelled in December, skirting Angouleme and arriving at Rejallent campsite near Ruffec. We stayed here last summer on our way back, and then in December we did the last of our Christmas shopping in Ruffec.
The site is a bit scruffy out of season, a lot of work is being done; trees pruned, pitches regravelled etc, but the welcome is friendly, wifi available and only €11 including electricity. Ali uses the laundry and we catch up 'ont tinternet' then have a relaxed evening.
We read about Modern Express, a car carrier knocked over in Biscay and towed in with a 40 degree list and although we had two long days driving we're glad we rerouted and are now well on our way north.
