The labour-day weekend saw us visiting the wonderful city of New York. We got in late on the Friday night after flight delays and missing the ideal train connections, eventually managing to turn up at Sharky and Val's abode at around 1am.
The weekend was jam-packed with an excellent ratio of local activities to touristy activities!
Saturday
We started the day with an amazing flat white from Rex's coffee shop on 10th ave and a walk to Central park at Columbus Circle. Next, we made our way out to Brooklyn where hung out for the rest of the day amongst a great range of local spots:
- Ribs, corn bread, potato salad, and other delicious sides washed down with some tasty IPAs and summer ales at the Dinosaur Bar-B-Que.
- Shuffleboard at the Royal Palms. The kiwi pie & coffee truck even turned up for us to sample their mince and cheese pies and another flat white!
- Best icecream ever from the Ample Hills Creamery. Van couldn't even decide between out of the range of flavours on offer so went with the "surprise me" option, which didn't disappoint.
- Finished the evening with drinks out on the back patio at a sweet local bar.
Sunday
We kicked off the day with a 10k run around central park, at first with Val as our guide pointing out the spots from the movies, the lake, and 'cat hill' where a cat statue stood prowling as you are running up. On the way back, we grabbed another delicious flat white from Rex's (this became a daily tradition).
After we had freshened up, we grabbed a NY style lox bagel for brunch then took the subway down to the financial district and visited the 911 memorial, Wall street and the bull statue, and even fit in a little browsing at Century 21. After we'd explored that area, we walked north up to Soho and found a free table on the patio where we had a beer and a wine while yarning and people-watching. Memorable moment: the number of people with moon boots we saw.
After the arvo drinks, we headed back to the apartment to chill out for a bit before dinner. We got some typical NY pizza slices and these were super tasty - Matt couldn't stop raving about his bacon, mushroom and truffle oil slice. For dinner, we headed out to a really neat speakesy pizzeria and were joined by some of Mark and Val's kiwi buddies. For a nightcap, we went to a bar called Swift just around the corner.
Monday
A slightly more relaxed day, starting with a sleep in. We walked across midtown and grabbed a cheeseburger at a place tucked behind the curtain at the Le Parker Meridian, suitably named, the burger joint. After this, we checked out the skyline walk before retiring back to the apartment to relax for the arvo and sneak a cheeky run in. In the evening, we headed to Sharky's fave mexican place - Tacombi's - for dinner. The food did not disappoint and probably is now our fave mexican food place! - delicious fresh guacamole, unbelievable corn, and great tacos.
We loved NYC and will definitely be back!
