Dar Es Salaam, Tanzania
Usambara Mountains are situated in the north east of Tanzania, between Mount Kilimanjaro and the Indian Ocean region of Tanga and Pangani. Considered to be a "Galapagos" of the plant world, they remain little visited and offer a superb view of unspoiled habitats for endangered species.
Part of the ancient Eastern Arc range of mountains, the Usambaras are still, in many areas, covered by ancient forests that once extended across the African continent from east to west.
Once a battle ground disputed by the Masai and the Shambaa tribes, the beautiful and lush area became favoured by the Germans and the English during colonial times, as is evidenced by the numerous historical buildings from the past.
After a busy time on the Northern or Southern Circuit of Tanzania's main parks, you might consider time in the Usambaras. Here you will enjoy a pleasant climate, great treks, good birding, and for the botanist an amazing diversity of flora. Treks and drives will lead you though beautiful arable country and small villages up to majestic escarpments and mountain tops from where the views may be wonderful.
We offer guided treks in the region from one day to one week. It's best to take around three or four days, allowing you to see Lushoto Town, many small villages, and the wonderful viewpoints off the escarpments from where you can look to Kilimanjaro far off and down to the plains below.
