Juneau Shore Excursion: Gold Mining and Panning at Gold Creek from Juneau

From: £39.51

Duration: 90 minutes

Category: Outdoors

While you’re in port in Juneau, venture to Gold Creek and Last Chance Basin for a true Alaskan gold adventure! Hear about the historic Alaskan Gold Rush and learn how to pan for gold – you’ll keep all the gold you find! Your guide, dressed in traditional 19th-century attire, will take you to a secluded location along Gold Creek, only accessible with a special permit, and show you what it was like during the Gold Rush for the thousands who flocked to the region. Choose to either pan in the creek or enter the waist-high water in the demonstration trough – either way, you’re guaranteed to find gold!

When your ship docks in the Juneau port, embark first on a historical tour of the city, including a stop at the Alaska State Capitol building. Then your Alaskan gold adventure starts as you head with your guide to Gold Creek and the Last Chance Basin – the place where Joe Juneau and Richard Harris struck gold in 1880.

Your guide will show you how to pan for gold while painting a picture of the thousands of people who hurried to the region to strike it rich during the Gold Rush of the late 1800s. Get the hang of gold panning from your guide, and then try it yourself! You can either pan for gold in the creek or go in the waist-high water of the demonstration trough. While you search, you’ll be surrounded by the building remnants of the Alaska-Juneau Mining Company, which closed in 1944 due to the WWII labor shortage.

Head back to your ship with a newfound knowledge of one of Alaska’s most important events, as well as all the gold you find and an Orelove Brothers Gold Claim Certificate!

Worry-free Shore Excursion:
We will ensure your timely return to the Juneau port for this activity. In the rare event your ship has departed, we will arrange for transportation to the next port-of-call. If your ship is delayed and you are unable to attend this activity, your money will be refunded. See our terms and conditions for full details.
