North Sikkim as a Winter Holiday Destination
North Sikkim, India
The Northern Part of the Indian state Sikkim is another place to visit in winter. This region receives heavy snowfalls during the month of January and till March the quaint villages and the riverside valleys of North Sikkim, having a panoramic view of the surrounding snow-clad rugged mountain peaks, remain blanketed with snow. Experience the riot of colours at the time of sunrise when the first rays of the sun illuminate the sky and the snowy peaks with a reddish hue. Yumthung is the most famous among these valleys. Here countless white flags are placed in lines by the river creating an exclusive boulevard to stroll through them. The strong wind flutters the flags rigorously producing enchanting music that will make one lost in nature. The Hot Springs of the valley also draws tourists in the winter months as its lukewarm water is said to have the therapeutic value of soothing the body.
The wintrous beauty of the Gurudongmar Lake that placed in a Cold Desert region, attracts tourists even though the place is known as notorious for being tremendously cold and having a low oxygen level due to its height of 17,800 ft. In winter the lake goes under a dazzling white sheet of ice except for a part of the deep blue water that doesn't freezes even in the sub-zero temperature. Hence the lake being blended with white and blue colour and having the view of milky white Zemu Glacier hanging over on one side and golden desert mountains on the other creates a surreal scenery that you just should not miss.
Zero Point offers some stunning landscapes in winter. Earlier in the season (November/December), the vista of the crystal clear mountain streams flowing through the rocky terrains of golden and brownish hue interspersed with the white patches of snowflakes is a spectacular sight to enjoy. In the month of January, this place gets wrapped in a thick coating of snow and everything turns frozen. Walking on a frozen river or beholding the frozen cascades is a lifetime experience.
Katao is called the Switzerland of India due to the awesome landscapes it offers in the winter months. The snow-capped grades of Mt Katao stuffed with trees and hedges such as poppy, rhododendron and primula and the frozen waterfalls hanging out of the rugged terrains make this place just picture perfect. Here one can go for snow-sports like skiing, snowboarding and trekking the snowy terrains.
