Left Dawson City, Yukon Territory at 0745am and took the ferry across the Yukon River. Really tough to get on and off the ferry - lots of mushy sand and mounds of gravel . I had to basically get a running start off the ferry to get enough speed up to plow through the mound of **** created by the ferry pushing into the riverbank. Then, immediately got on the gravel of the Top of the World Highway! Grueling ride of 140 miles to the Alaskan border. We were so high, we were above the tree line! There was some snow on the ground, and not too cold. Pretty, but desolate looking.
Got to the Poker Customs and Border Patrol Station in Alaska around 1000 am. Neat - it's the farther northern entry point in the United States. The CBP Inspector was a nice young guy who's girlfriend is an ICE agent in Anchorage. We chatted a bit while he was inspecting me, after all, there was NO line, no waiting!
The Top of the World Highway on the U.S. side is really bad. Mostly dips, potholes, rough patches. It is absolutely NOT maintained at all. We averaged about 35 mph.
Stopped at Boundary, Alaska - has one cute little shop, and a landing strip. And that's pretty much it. The owner is from Boston and he loves it up here...out in the middle of nowhere.
Then, on to CHICKEN, Alaska! Three-shop "town" with a bar and a cafe. Had a good lunch there. The soup of the day (and every day) is ......you guessed it - CHICKEN! After riding the Top of the World highway with a fully-loaded Harley, I stopped and kissed the ground. Just lucky to be alive. Then, had a shot of whiskey and a beer! Some guys riding dual-sport bikes pulled up next to my Harley. I was sitting at the picnic table right in front of it, and one of them asked me if that was the bike "we" rode the highway on. I said yes, that's the bike "I" rode the highway on. He came over and shook my hand, and said he did not know of any woman who rode the Top of the World Highway on a huge Harley!
Very, very windy on the road from Chicken to Tok, Alaska. I was very pooped from the rough riding today.
On to Anchorage tomorrow, to put the bikes in the shop for an oil change and damage assessment!
So very dusty.....can't wait to take a shower!
