After a great nights sleep in the AC heaven we decided to book for two more nights we went to reception and were told the hostel was fully booked for the rest of the weekend, as a coach load (54) of Sri Lankan school kids were there for Halloween. So, our plans for an early start and exploring the city were now put on hold, we walked around for about an hour trying to find somewhere but were all at least $5 (£2.50) each more than we were currently paying. We managed to find a hostel at $18 (£8.10) each and checked into the 29 bed dormitory and eventually at 12:00 set off out.
Our first stop was the battle box museum, it was a museum which had been placed in a refurbished HQ bunker from WWII. The tour explained the days leading up to the eventual discussion of surrender by the British and allied troops to the Japanese. It was really interesting and gave an insite into why Singapore was an asset to the Japanese, and why British and allied troops failed in their hope to secure Singapore.
Next we walked into the city and headed straight to the main shopping district, Orchard Road.....shopping mall, shopping mall, shopping mall, but the AC was amazing (and free)! Then after a couple of hours we walked into the CBD and there was a free music concert set-up by the local council. We sat there for half an hour or so and listened to the guy play many tunes well known at home, Coldplay, Radiohead, etc.
Then we had to shoot off for our front row seats at the Singapore Esplanade for a free dance festival. We sat there for about half an hour before it started and watched some really good traditional Malaysian dancing. Although the show was short it was really nice to watch and they even got some of the audience involved.
En route home we went for a cheap meal at the food court near by, really wasn't badly priced although we wouldn't like to risk eating out at a restaurant!
After tea we popped to Carrefour for packed lunch stuff for our trip to the zoo tomorrow.
