Kakadu National Park is huge!!
We only had one full day so we didn't have time to see very much. Many of the sights were still closed after the wet season as well, and had they been open would require a fair bit of hiking. Not possible with our two little munchkins. Elise very rarely walks in the direction we actually want to go. So our hikes have to be very short.
All the sights are also very far apart in Kakadu so it is difficult to get around and see many things in one day.
We decided to book a sunrise river cruise. We are up early anyway so we may as well go out on a cruise. It had breakfast included as well so that was another selling point. It was a great cruise, we saw lots of birds, eagles and crocodiles. We even go to see two crocodiles have a little stand of where one of them lunged at the other. Very exciting. The guide was really good as well and had lots of interesting information about the aboriginal people in the area and their way of life.
At the end of the cruise we were driven back to the hotel where we were picked up and we had a yummie breakfast. After breakfast we drove to a place called Nourlangie Rock. There was a short hike that we could do partly with the prams and the added bonus that it was quite shady. There were some aboriginal paintings, one which had quite a funny description. It was of a dangerous spirit who eats females after striking them with a yam.
We had lunch at Jabiru, the main town in Kakadu. There is a hotel there shaped like a crocodile, we had lunch in it's belly. After that we drove back to the caravan park and went for a swim in the pool. It was too far to drive anywhere else.
On the way to Darwin the next day we stopped at a place called Mamukala. A wetland which usually is full of birds. We were there at lunch time and we didn't see a singel bird. Probably better to be there early in the morning or late afternoon.
So if you are going to Kakadu, make sure you have lots of time. Three days minimum. If we go again it will be when the kids are able to do more hiking.
