Visited the Cu Chi Tunnels today - quite an experience!
The tunnel network at Cu Chi became legendary during the 1960's for its role in facilitating Viet Cong control of a large rural area only 30km from Saigon. At its height, the tunnel sytem stretched from Saigon to the Cambodian border!! In the district of Cu Chi alone there were over 200km of tunnels - a truly amazing feat of inginuity, patience and intelligence.
It is very hard to describe what they are like - they are just incredible. Much smaller than i had anticipated and so i have to admit i was a complete whimp and turned back - waaaaaay to small for me!!! (infact the giude made a point that some of the tunnels have had to be stretched to accommodate the larger westerners!).
Not only did we see the tunnels but we also saw some of the traps the Vietnamese used (truly gruesome), how they made rice paper and my heart nearly stopped beating when we went to the shooting range. The sound of an AK is absolutely deafening! Spine tingling.
It was a very interesting day all round.
