Well it has been quite an emotional day helping clear the rubble on Ko Phi Phi Island. It really is a heart-breaking site. Although it was some months ago now there is still a lot of clearing to be done. There were many many helpers, some of which have been there since january. Listening to thier accounts of how it was then, I realised I have not seen the worst by a long way.
I can't believe how resilient the Thais are. Despite having thier lives turned upside down the locals are positive, friendly and helpful people. They provided the volunteers with food and water all day, thankfully as it was very hard going under the glare of the unrelenting sun.
It is harsh to see Phuket already back on its feet after some considerable financial aid from the government and campaigns and then to see the islands still struggling.
I would like to have stayed much longer as even through all the demolition you can see it is a really stunning place. Hopefully even my short stay has gone some way towards helping some of them rebuild thier lives.
