Today we got up early and had breaky because Nichol had booked a driver for the day, it's apparently the way it is done round here so at 9:00 the man from putu company named sarwa came and collected us and took us on a journey around Bali.
First stop was the very touristy batik place where you got to see the ladies weaving the fabric and making the batik which was pretty cool but the shop was a little pricey so we skipped that!
Then onto the lawak coffee - yep, that's the one that the Asian cat like creature eats then poos out! It was kinda cool to try and pretty nice coffee although super expensive, we got to see some little lawak (as they call it in the local language) in cages but they looked a little sad :(. There were also some delicious teas to taste - the mangosteen and the red ginger were the picks with the coconut coffee coming in second tasting like a milk arrowroot biscuit. Decided not to buy any though because it was pretty expensive and we already have heads of tea.
On to the monkey forest! Just thought Ubud there was this cool monkey forest, we went on a wander through and saw some lovely temples, and lots of naughty monkeys! There was also some cool architecture and plant life - very jungly.
Sarwa dropped us off in the middle of Ubud near the palace because he said there was no parking so we swapped Indonesian numbers and trundled along. First was a quick wander through the palace, some intricate architecture and facades but not the fanciest of palaces that I have seen then for a wander through the famous art markets, I can see why people say this is the better place to go but didn't understand until visiting Kuta! We'll have to go back and stay before we go home I think. Called up the driver and had a delicious ice block that I think was coconut milk and sugar cane (strange picture) and Nichol had a cocoa one maybe? Anyway it was awesome, it is pretty hot here.
Then heading off for the luwatu temple on the sea with a quick stop at a warung for some delicious satay and this strange lamb soup thing (dunno what it was) along the way, one of the best meals yet!
Got to the temple and had to put on a long price of fabric to go in, guess my skirt was too short, also I think you need to dress balanese because even the people with trousers had to tie a scarf around their middle. Temples here are not as fancy as ones in other parts of the world although it was in a lovely spot on a cliff, we went for a walk around to get a better view of the thing and the waves crashing on the bottom of the cliff it was perched on looked awesome, apparently they have Indonesian dancing at sun set but we were there a little early with more to see!
Last thing for the day, it was a long one, was geger temple (or something like that) that Nichol found in his fromer's. It was super cheap to go to - only 30c - and not touristy at all, we had a little wander through and our lovely guide explained that they do the carvings/ decorations by mixing wet sand with wet cement and creating the patterns while it is wet then letting them dry, much easier than carving!
After a long day of driving we gave sarwa an early mark (they typically work a 10 hour driving day) and had a little relax and a drink before our fancy dinner that we booked in the Italian restaraunt, apparently that's the fancy, exotic cuisine in Bali.
Dinner was pretty average but I didn't feel compelled to eat it so that was a winner!
Off to bed to rest up for our last day of poolside drinking and buffets, gotta love a late checkout!
