have had an interesting couple of days in singapore to say the least. i can't really say it's won me over, daytimes have but for one reasona and one alone (money leading to odd locations) the nightlife certainly hasn't.
day one, it's midday by the time we can check in to our hotel, up we go, offload our stuff have a shower and get ready to start our day. we start with a trip to the world famous raffles, once a hotel now a whole blimmin' district!! the journey there was fairly long as we werehiking our way around singapore with not a huge idea of the direction. we did however get some ice-cream, i'd forgotten how much i like mint choc chip!
we got to raffles and i must say my heart sank, from the outside it is not impressive, we went in though and all was much better - we were going to go for a cocktail but it was 4.50GBP for a can of 7up, cocktails started around 15gbp, we're on a budget don't they know?!?!... never mind, we go to look around the shops where we can't afford anything but found a nice place to have lunch for 3 pounds, it was japanese and it was good :) we then walked over to marina bay, the pics look beautiful on the leaflets, the reality is a lot of constructino work (a lot of false advertising goes on in singapore - that may have contributed to it not winning me over)
other factors that are now springing to mind would be the fact it wasn't sparkling clean like i expected and the first thing when we arrived was a crappy little train station with no info or atm and a taxi driver that shouted at me like i'd done something horrific in asking if he knew of any guesthouses. well i can tell you i slammed the door in his face and turned and walked off. taxi drivers the world over are a**eh*les, if you know any, advise they change career before they end up like that.
ok, back to marina bay - the merlion was cool and while we were there we felt pretty famous, lots of the 'foreigners' (to us) there wanted our pic, i mean lots - it is weird - people here think we're interesting, we find it hilarious and pose with/for them if they ask - god knows who's going to see the pics! haha! after the merlion i believe we made our way to the night safari - my god this was awesome!! easily a highlight and easily the best bit of singapore. we got there and bought our tickets, we were on our way to the tram that takes you through (we'd been walking all say and fancied the lazy way - btw mum i've lost 2 dress sizes! checked in the dorothy perkings whilst we were shopping!) and there were these guys playing drums and jumping around in loin cloths, we had a pic for poops and parties and then they dragegd us off and took us into one of tyhe restaurant bits and had us (reyn unsuccessfully attempted escape) prancing around! it was too funny! was hot by the end of it though! then we found out they were doing a fire show within the next half hour so we opted to wait to watch that and held some snakes (pictorial evidence can be provided) in thw meanwhile. i'm not scared of snakes though so this isn't an amazing feat, though i was surprised by how warm it was, i was expecting it to be cold...
then they starte the show - fire breathing, rolling fire on their bodies, jumping on the top of totem pole style things... then blowing darts to burst balloons held in precarious positions by one of the guys. they start coming towards the crowd to get someone to burst the one between his knees - take me by the hand and pull me out! i'm wetting myself laughing at thise point as they give me a GIANT pea shooter and aim it for me and say blow. WHOOSH!! i blow through it and something - not sure if it actually came from my direct sticks in the buy's leg! he's running and screaming and lies on the floor, they guide me over to him and tell me to pull it out - i do and he leers forward screaming- i sh*t my pants and scream back! haha - the guy made me jump!! they put my hands in the air like i've achieved something and i return to my place. they did some amazing stunts and grabbed a guy out to try some, he tried to roll the fire on hios body without any of their protective stuff - needless to say he burned himself. idiot. he also was supposed to feed on e fire but smacked him in the face instead! and i thought i was unco-ordinated...
after the show we actually did the night safari, it was cool, as ever the tigers were the most beautiful, the hippo was cool though - not a massive fan of rhinos or deer still though...
after we made our way back - only just cathing the last tube ride! on the tube i have to admit everyone looks really out of it - sore rlooking red eyes and all, never mind... we get and holy sh*t we've rocked up to a hotel in the middle of... can you guess... the fedging red light district of singapore - only there's more of them than there was in the w**** house in bangkok!! (don't ask HOW we keep ending up in these places - we just ask for cheap hotels... NOT our fault!) anyway, we walk back snarling at anyone that looks at us, honestly the people keeping this trade going disgust me, men and women alike, even though the women often have no choice. the men on the other hand deserve castration and nothing less. anyway we realised there are about 8 hotels in the same chain as ours and we're not sure where our building is, flag a taxi and get there. when we pulled up he asked if we knew what the people were doing, i answered i'd rather not think about it and he found it hilarious but seemed pleased that we weren't on unawares and about to get kidnapped... tbh i don't think they'd do anything to westerners out here, you can tell from the way they look at us so all is ok in that sense. anyhoo back into our hotel and off to sleepies.
day 2 - we switch to a cheaper hotel, only up the road - we're still in singaw****. but it's cheaper. crawling with bugs. but cheaper. then we got to sentosa - supposedly beautiful island with beaches etc. we get there and take a walk, see a bigger merlion (a lion's head on a fish tail - like a merman but a lion) get filmed by local folk that think we're interesting and catch someone else trying to sneak a pic - he got embarrassed and asked us to take a pic of him after haha!! we get to the beach - we are expecting white sands, crystal clear water... it's filthy - honestly, singapore tourism office LIES on a regular basis!! never mind, we read on the sand, watch some volleyball and then head to songs of the sea (a show). what can i say about the show? think high school musical, then replace the entire cast with special people! it was hilarious! the lasers and fireworks and water fountains were awesome though - they just spoiled the inbetween bits with singing and dancing! haha, honestly i sounds miserable but i say all this in good humour - i was laughing at them all the way through!
head home and by the time we get there Elizabeth is just starting on HBO - good film, i fell asleep though, reyn assures me the ending was good - the guy went for the younger, prettier girl and the queen flipped about that. soory if you've not seen it yet :p
today we checked out, did some shopping - i picked up a notebook pa - tiny and about the same price as the other one but has lots of good stuff on it from what i can see and a memory card reader for when i can get on it :D:D then picked our bags up and came to the air con airport to read. we've got a flight to australia between 10 and 11pm sometime so the next update is coming from there.
i am happy and healthy and merry, i hope you all are, and i hope you miss me too ;)
lots of love
