Hello Everybody!
Wow, I have so much to say and I hope I can wrap it up for you into an interesting read. Time really flies, for so much I still have a time perception.. most of the time I don't know what day it is and I guess that's probably a good thing. Everyday has been so completely different so far and I must say I am loving it! Sometimes it gets a bit overwhelming and then I want to be dropped on my couch at home and do absolutely nothing.. but very soon I realize again this is exactly where I want to be.
Sukhothai
Last time I wrote was in Sukhothai, Thailand. Here I went cycling through the Sukhothai Historic Park, soaking up all the ruins and what a sight for sore eyes, so many amazing statues all within 5 km radius. The ruins in Sukhothai (which means Rising Happiness) are well preserved and less urban than those at Ayuthaya. The next day I fetched the bus to Chiang Mai.
Chiang Mai
This is known as the great outdoors of the northern mountains, so off course I had to do some serious trekking here…;-) So the first day I was on a mission to stumble against the best travel agent who could give me the best deal, because everybody wants a slice of action within this competitive business. So off I go the next day all excited for my visit to the hill tribe-villages, with some jungle action, waterfall, plus bamboo and wild water rafting and elephant ride. Reality was that the most hill tribe villages were set up with shops and wasn't a real village, the jungle action was just a 30 minute easy walk.. but I did enjoy the rafting, especially the wild water rafting and splashing the other competitors wet! And the elephant ride was very adventurous... I'm telling you.. how many times I thought I would fall out of that bucket.. phew.
Pai
So thank goodness public transport has been kind to me, no broken cars, well driven, air-conditioned and very cheap. The next stop was Pai, where the so called hippie trail is alive and well, with a solid music, art and New Age scene. In the bus I met an owner of a guesthouse and decided to stay there and glad I did, just out of town, close to nature, with beautiful views. Pai has something special, I heard travellers got stuck there for weeks and didn't see anything else anymore, I also stayed longer than expected. The vibe is relaxed, everybody is friendly and doing nothing is just fine. I didn't do much more than some cycling and motor biking around Pai, relaxing and socializing at the pool, listening to some bands and dancing all night at a halfmoon party in the jungle. I will miss you Pai!
Chiang Rai
Alright, so welcome back to planet Earth.. Chiang Rai. Here are also numerous of trekking possibilities, but I was running out of time, because of my 30 day visa for Thailand, hanging around in Pai too long, haha. So I stayed here for one day and did some sightseeing into town. Nothing too much impressive to see, I think I have seen too many temples.. Unfortanetly, I had a noisy room at the side of a buzzing street, so I was happy to leave the next day for a two hour bus drive to Chiang Khong, the border of Thailand. Within a few minutes I crossed over the border by boat into Laos. Next time I will tell you all about Laos.
Take care and greetings from Ninh Binh, Vietnam!
