Planes, Trains, and Automobiles!
Wow, can't believe all that has happened in the last couple days. We left my brother Peter and his family (with much sadness) yesterday morning and made our journey from Washington DC (actually Arlington) to New York City. What a journey - firstly we miscalculated how long it would take ... we thought 4 hours, but in actual fact it was more like 6 hours .... we hit New York traffic and also low bridges making us have to detour quite frequently. Our GPS (Julia) was invaluable as she then recalculated and got us back on track. Our RV was 13 feet tall and many of the bridges in downtown New York are under that and we really didn't want to leave the airconditioner on the bridge.
We also had a little trouble finding our hotel - Holiday Inn - as it has changed names since we last booked it. After some frustration and a lot of heat exhaustion (was 103 F ) yesterday with high humidity we landed at the hotel also only to find they had only one room for us .... after some chatting all was well ...... but we were all tired and very hungry. Thought we'd try a local chinese place only to find it's only take out and we felt very "white". So we came back to the hotel and ended up phoning delivery. When it came there was so much!!!! A much looked for sleep ensued!
Woke up early 'cos we were now insecure as to how long it would take us to get to the other side of New York to drop off the RV and how all the bridges caused problems. Well we got to the RV dropoff in 1 1/2 hours - PHEWWWWWW!!!
No problems at all - thank you God.
We then got a shuttle van back, but not to JFK airport but rather Newark airport (New Jersey) wouldn't take us to the other. Then we caught a city bus to Newark Penn Station where caught the PATH subway to 33rd ST - Manhattan. Are you exhausted? WE were and especially since the temperature was the same as yesterday with high humidity and the subway airconditioner wasn't working!!! Anyway, we then went up 5th ave looking for the American Girl Place .... wow what an amazing shop - even have hairdressers for the dolls! Emma got an early birthday present (very early) you'll have to meet Emily ("a just like me" doll). Then we caught a taxi back to the hotel.
Let me recap the day's transport - RV - Shuttle van - city bus - subway - taxi. What a day!
Tomorrow we have to leave early to get the shuttle to the airport .... on our way home ..... see you all soon ... a 6 hour flight to LA, 8 hours in LA airport, 14 hours to Sydney, 2 hours to Adelaide with 2 hours in Sydney. We miss the whole day of Thursday so back in Adelaide Saturday and up to Loxton Monday.
God Bless all - catch you all soon,
love, the travelling Hansen's & Sparky xxxxxxxx
