Hong Kong, my final destination. I can't believe I'm here...where has the last 6 months gone!
I stayed with my godfather in Hong Kong - such a change from hostels, haha - and had a really good time. He had so many tips and advice that I saw so much. I spent a day exploring Lantau Island, which is where the biggest buddah statue in the the world is. It was really big, lol! It was good to get a bit of culture in as well after going through America, Australia and New Zealand!! I had a vegetarian meal at the Po Ling monastery which was, um, interesting. I went to Tai O as well, a traditional fishing village built around water where all the houses are on stilts! It's what Hong Kong used to be like.
Another day I took a ferry across to Macau, the Las Vegas of the east. It is a former Portuguese colony and as such very different from Hong Kong. It was an interesting place; amongst the old, colonial buildings are Vegas-style mega-resorts (like The Venetian, MGM). An extremely strange contrast! Getting around was somewhat of a challenge too as all the signs are in Chinese and Portuguese! Not speaking either (!) made for a lot of guesswork and map reading, haha! It was all good fun though!
I also spent some time among the high-rise of Hong Kong island and the markets of Kowloon. Some of the places they have squeezed skyscrapers into is just mad! It does, though, make for a stunning skyline, especially at night when all the buildings are lit up and do a light show, firing lasers into the sky in sequence. Kowloon, whilst having the mandatory high-rise, has some great markets with some of the strangest stuff on sale - the food markets were good to walk around and see some of the weird and wonderful things people over there eat!
After a lot of sightseeing and walking around a few beers went down well! The best places for a drink I found to be in Lang Kwai Fung and Wan Chai. Great places filled with all sorts of different bars and loads of people. It was fun just to have a walk around as well!
