Emily and I have decided to stay in Broome until Sunday, and will then be going to Kununurra for two days, and then we will finally get to Darwin! It means we can chill out a bit and get used to the heat before we move on. We have a found a really shady patch for our tent in the campsite, although the tent is now covered in bird droppings! I don't know what the birds are but they are nocturnal and make a right racket - they sound like naughty school children cackling to each other, sniggering and egging each other on and it's not a pretty noise!
I have finally managed to get some more photos up of our journey so far. There's a couple of new albums up so I hope you can find them in the photos section!
On Monday Emily and I went on a camel ride at sunset on Cable Beach, which was so much better than I thought it would be! When we saw the camels I got a bit freaked out but then once we got up close I was fine, although when Em saw the way you get on and off a camel she freaked out instead! The camels sit down to allow people to get on and off them, and they lower two legs at a time so it's a bit bumpy! At the end of our ride Jabby (our camel) decided to sit down before he was told to which was a bit of a shock but better because we didn't have time to worry about it! The ride was lovely - it was led by backpackers who were working for the camel company and they were really friendly and took some good pictures for us. We just walked along the beach and then down by the shore, and I had heard that they finished the ride before the actual sunset but we didn't - it happened while we were riding and it was beautiful. There were hundreds of people dotted along the beach taking pictures and waving, and riding the camel was relatively comfortable. I was slightly wary of the camel behind me, especially when we stopped and it put its jaws around my elbow... But it was so much fun and a really happy thing to remember!
On Tuesday I went over to Cable Beach again (on the bus - we keep having the same woman driver as Broome isn't very big!) to the Malcolm Douglass Crocodile Park. Mr. Douglass is big in the crocodile world and does TV shows and things (like an older Steve Irwin) but he wasn't there. The crocodiles were amazing - I loved it! They are so big and sit so still. When the guide disturbed the water of the pools massive crocs would launch out of it which was very surprising and really good! It made me think of that old Thunderbirds episode and now I understand why Peter used to hide under a cushion!!! I also finally saw a kangaroo close up - she had a joey in her pouch that fell out! They are being looked after with orphaned roos in pens at the back of the park. I got to hold a little baby crocodile that had its jaws clamped shut with an elastic band - it felt squidgy and cool.
In the evening we stayed on Town Beach (where our campsite is) to watch Staircase to the Moon. It happens in winter when it's a full moon, as the tides are really low and the rising moon reflects off the exposed sandflats and it creates a really straight golden column of light on the sandflats, that looks like a staircase due to the ridges of sand. But we didn't see it! We were sat in the wrong place and jetty was in the way - we could tell it was happening though when the jetty started flashing with all the people taking pictures! So yesterday (Wednesday) we were a bit wiser and sat on the jetty waiting - and it was beautiful! I have seen so many pictures of it but the real thing looks better and more magical. It was a lovely thing to watch. I tried to load some pictures up here but I don't think they've worked - I think the website has had enough pictures for today! Tonight is the last night the staircase appears so we are going to go and watch it again.
