I finished working at Napperby yesterday, and am in Alice Springs now. I'm off to work at Deep Well Station which is south of Alice to help teach the boys that live there. It's all a bit sudden, as my boss hired extra backpackers and then realised she didn't have enough work for us all so I was plonked on the delivery truck that left at 5am this morning and here I am. Alice feels cooler than Napperby and it is strange seeing traffic lights again.
Napperby was brilliant and I am sad to have left it. I really enjoyed it there and all the people were really friendly, but the lads who were mustering left on Monday and Clare, who I was working with, left yesterday so I'm off to meet new people now :) I went into a chemists just now and was talking to the girl on the till who randomly knows the people at both Napperby and Deep Well and she assures me that the new family are lovely which is good.
I had to get up while it was still dark and it was strange waking up and still being able to see so many stars. I saw the sunrise on the way in and it was beautiful. There were a few kangaroos hopping around but luckily we didn't hit any. We had the radio on nearer to Alice and they were running a competition asking what the 2nd and 4th planets from the sun were. The callers did not have a clue - one said the moon and another said Saturn. I am seriously worried about this country.
I heard a classic line the other day - someone told another man to take a teaspoon of cement and harden up a bit! I like that.
So I'm pottering about today, stocking up on chocolate for the next trip to the middle of nowhere, and planning my way home. Three and a half months and I'll be back by the good old North Sea.
Happy April Fool's day everyone, I hope it's a funny day for you all!
