Getting to Your Location
To get to Oregon, travelers may choose to fly, drive, take a train, or come by ship on a cruise. Some modes of transport are a bit limited, so to see most sites in Oregon a car is highly recommended.
Air: Air travel is one way that tourists can come into the Oregon area, however, travelers will have to use some sort of ground transport to be able to travel to more areas. There are 98 airports in Oregon, and only two of them are international airports. The most popular (and perhaps best airport in Oregon) is the Portland International Airport. This airport has a bus hub and a light rail connected to it. This airport also accounts for around 90% of passenger travel and around 95% of air cargo. The airlines that fly into Oregon consist of Delta, United, Southwest, Alaska, Hawaiian, Frontier, JetBlue, American Airlines, Spirit, Sun Country, and Boutique Air.
Extra: Delta is based in Atlanta, GA. United is based in Chicago, IL. Southwest is based in Dallas Love Field, TX. Alaska is based in Seattle, WA. Hawaiian is based in Honolulu, HI. Frontier is based in Denver, CO. JetBlue is based in NYC. American Airlines is based in Fort Worth, TX. Spirit is based in Miramar, FL. Sun Country is based in Minneapolis, MN. Boutique Air is based in San Francisco, CA.
Water: Oregon has one cruising port which is located in Astoria. Going this route would give visitors a taste of Oregon, but it isn't the main type of transport. The Royal Caribbean Cruises offers trips to Astoria, whereas Princess Cruises offers Pacific coast cruises (so Astoria is one of several stops). Royal Caribbean Cruises are based in Miami, FL. Princess Cruises are based in Santa Clarita, CA.
Ground: Oregon is mostly traveled by car, and driving is easygoing (cities can be a bit busier). Travelers coming by airport have the option of renting a car. Portland International Airport has five rental car providers, but there are also a few other providers outside of the airport. Prices vary between each depending on the length of stay and the size of the car. If travelers are planning to only stay in the Portland area, there is a variety of other options. Portland is known for its many bike paths, so cycling is very popular. E-scooters have also become a popular way to move around the city. Portland also has ride-sharing, a MAX light rail, Streetcar service, light rail, bus (Greyhound and Boltbus), and the Amtrak Cascades bus and passenger rail service. For 2 1/2 hours of bus riding, the Trimet costs $2.50 for an adult and $1.25 for youth. Some of these modes of transport can go beyond Portland as well.
For a more environmentally friendly transit, travelers can use train systems. Amtrak is the only passenger rail service in Oregon that connects 18 different cities (from Eugene, WA to Vancouver, BC.) It is one of 11 federally designated rails in the U.S. according to the Federal Railroad Administration.
Getting around Your location
Oregon is around 98,466 square miles, so there is quite a large area to explore. To see just the coastline, it would take about 8 hours to drive from Astoria (top of the coast) to Brookings (bottom of the coast) with no stops. Locals and most travelers get around Oregon by car.
Fun fact, Astoria is where the movie "Goonies" was filmed.
