Bula from Fiji!!
We are on our last day here now after having a fantastic time we have seen and done lots of fun and amazing things!
We left LA on the 5th March and arrived in Fiji on the 7th March after flying over timezones so if anything exciting happened on the 6th March let us know!
We arrived in Fiji at 5:15am and as soon as we got off the plane the heat really hit us, even at that time in the morning it was about 27 degrees. So the hoodies got swiftly packed away. The were three men to greet everyone off the plane playing guitars and singing the bula song!
We went to the Nadi bay hotel to get showered and have breakfast then got picked up by the big green bus to start our Feejee Experience tour. Our guide was called Bola and our driver Arvin they were lots of fun and very entertaining. We met the others in our group, 2 english girls Holly and Kelly, and English boy Tom, an American girl Elisa and a couple from the Czech Republic.
On our first day we went to Natadola Beach after having a look round Nadi town and the fruit market there. We had a couple of hours to sunbathe and get in the sea Andy played vollyball in the sea with the Czech couple and i got sunburnt feet! We had a bbq there. Naturally all the brits got sunburnt while the others were nicely tanned!
Next we went to a village, we all had to wear sarongs and the girls had to cover there shoulders. We had a look around, it was tiny with only a few huts and a church. I had a go at getting some water out of the well they use to get all there water from and then i had to take it to a man doing his washing! Next we went to Sigatoka sand dunes. Some of the group surfed down them. I didn't as they were really steep and it was raining hard. The girls that did go down all ended up head first in the wet sand! That night we stayed at Mango Bay resort. We had dinner and me and Andy did a pub quiz, we teamed up with 3 women from Essex, we were called Andy's Angels! We came second.
Day 2 - We headed to one of the main rivers in Fiji. Half of the group did a trek through the forest/mountains and the other half of us went on a long boat trip up the river. We all met up for lunch and then went tubing down the river for a little way on rubber rings. I had to be rescued by the longboat along with Elisa as i got pushed into the rapids and she crashed into the boat. Then we went to a waterfall where you could swim underneath it, Andy decided to wow the group with his best belly flop attempts! That night we stayed at the Raintree lodge in Suva and went into Suva for a meal that evening at Mad Dog Restaurant. We then went next door to the nightclub Reillys but we all left at 10 as it wasn't the most exciting place.
Day 3 - After a nice breakfast we headed to a village primary school and met all the children they were aged from 6 - 16 and were lots of fun. They loved having there photos taken and some of them gave us there address to send the photos to them. One class sang London's Burning to us as we were from England and all the boys wanted to be like David Beckham or Jonny Wilkinson when they are older! After the School we went to a village to meet the cheif and have a traditional Kava ceremony. Kava is a drink they make from a root of a plant mixed with water. It looks like muddy water and it tastes a bit like mud too. It wasn't too bad as we both established we have drank worse things in our time. The boys finished off the Kava and the girls weaved bracelets with some of the village women. I was with an 18 year old girl and it was really interesting to hear how different her life is to mine. That night we stayed at VoliVoli beach resort and had a go at crab racing.
Day 4 - This was our last day on the tour. We headed back to Nadi and on the way we stopped of at a mud pool and hot pool. It was so much fun but felt really weird. We smothered it all over us then got in the hot pool which was baking hot! Afterwards we had to get clean under showers that were literally just drips! That night we stayed at Smugglers Cove and i bumped into a girl i went to primary school with in Andover. I don't think i have even seen her since we left primary school so very weird.
The next 6 days we spent at Beachcomber Island, it was just like you see in the photos, whites beaches and clear blue seas. When we got there we went swimming in the sea straight away. One of the first people i saw in the sea was another girl i know from Andover and she recognised Andy too as she went to the same Uni as us! A very small world! While we were there half the time it was baking hot and sunny and the other half it rained. We didn't mind the rain too much though as it cooled things down! We went snorkelling and saw loads of different fish and Andy saw 2 sharks, not the ones that can kill though! We tucked into lots of nice food everyday and spend the evenings in the Sand Bar playing cards and chatting to the others there, lots more english people and lots from New Zealand too. The last 2 days 2 of the girls we met on our tour were on the island too and it was one of their birthdays so we had a cake bought out for that! One night there was crab racing again, Andy had the English crab, they had named it Rooney! It didn't win though.
We have both been eayen alive by bugs and mosquitos, Andy has so many on his back he looks like one big bite, and they have decided to attack one side of my face!
We are back in Nadi tonight as we have an early flight to Auckland tomorrow morning. We have enjoyed Fiji lots but are both looking forward to going somewhere a bit busier now and with slightly less bugs to eat us!
Lots of Love Kate and Andy xxxx
