So, we've been here for 4 days now and been awake for 2!
On Tuesday we found our hostel surprisingly easily. Considering the terrible reviews of all the hostels in Hong Kong, I was quite happy with our room. It's a tiny box but relatively clean and we're not sharing with any 6 (or 8) legged creatures. We dropped our bags and went for a walk around the area, after an hour or so, we were both knackered (having not really slept on the flight) and went back to the hostel to sleep. This was at about 7, around 12 I woke up and couldnt get back to sleep again until 5am. We both woke up the next day at 3pm.
Wednesday was spent walking around Kowloon, seeing what was there. There's a really nice park with lots of ponds with a few ugly fish and some awesome turtles. We walked along the harbour and watched a light 'show'- basically buildings turning their lights on and off to music! We met up with my Dad's friend Louis and had a nice, proper chinese meal. Grace and I both had a spring roll, although after the first bite, Grace looked over and saw my look of horror and disgust- there were prawns in it. I left the rest. After dinner, we went out for a few drinks and surprisingly, San Miguel seems to be the beer of choice here. We got back to our room at 2, annoying our crazy roommate- we're not getting on. The room we're all in is ridiculously small and she has managed to spread all of her stuff everywhere, including an iron.
The plan for Thursday was to get up early and go to Ocean Park. I snoozed my alarm at 8.30, turned it off at 9.30 and we didn't actually wake up until 11. A rush to get ready followed by taking a train in the wrong direction meant we didn't get to the park until 1. We had been given a number to ring when we arrived to get a discounted ticket and managed to save $70 by going in as a 'group'... It was a bit dodgy. Despite its name, Ocean Park doesn't have a huge focus on fish. I even managed to go into the aquarium as it was full of interesting sea creatures, not just the repulsive scaly kind! We watched a show with some sea lions and later, one with dolphins and sea lions together. Unfortunately there wasn't a whale as I had been expecting but the animals there were still good. There were a few rides and a rollercoaster too, which we took advantage of, although ran out of time so didn't get to the rapids. Ocean Park also houses a couple of giant pandas- they really don't do much other than eat and sit. But this led to some strange souvenirs, for example, toy pandas dressed up as fish, toy dolphins dressed as pandas and jellyfish dressed as sailors...
That night we did a pub crawl, met some cool people, got a load of free drinks and generally had a good night. We had one problem though- getting back to Kowloon from Hong Kong island without getting ripped off by a taxi. Luckily, we somehow found a minibus that went fairly near our hostel.
Today we overslept yet again, not waking up until 2. We went swimming in the park and made full use of the nice showers. We got the ferry over to the other island and tried to get to the peaks to watch the sunset bit were too late and ended up just walking around for a bit.
I'm going to try and get a relatively early night to try and rectify this sleeping pattern so we can have a full day out!
