Postcard of Alice Springs and Uluru - written in Brisbane
Hi Everyone!!!
You will be glad to hear that we survived both Alice Springs and Camping at Uluru (Ayers Rock)...............
Alice Springs was rough as hell!! It reminded me of something from an old cowboy film (it even had a saloon bar!!!). Although I did think of the Film 'Priscilla Queen of the Desert'the whole time I was there and empathised with the drag queens!!
The coach journey took forever to get to Uluru (6 hours) and at one point I threatened to charter a helicopter for the return trip! Luckily Steve is a bot more level headed than I am and talked me down!! I have to say it was well worth the journey though!!
We visited Kings Canyon during the day and then watched the sun set over Uluru, which was truly amazing (will stay with me forever). We then had a BBQ - Ozzy steaks etc. and then camped under the stars, which I have to say was a once in a lifetime experience.........
Being in the outback, only 1 snake was spotted at our campsite. I have to say though that we were relatively calm about camping in the open (I think the 3 beers each to calm our nerves helped).......
All was great until 3am when drama struck and the heavens opened!! I didn't think that it rained in the desert - but it did that night!! So it was a mad dash back into the tents for everyone.......... 1 hours kip later and we were up at 4am to see the sunrise at Uluru (this was fantastic).
After this we were put through 3 hours of trekking (I had hoped to stay on the bus and kip, but it wasn't an option). Finally we had a spot of lunch and then headed back to Alice Springs.
We got back to Alice at around 6pm and roughed it some more in the Youth Hostel (we had to share a dorm with a couple of chaps - put it this way, it wasn't the Marriot)
Which brings us to today.......... we are now in Brisbane and about to explore the big city. Tomorrow we head down the coast to Byron Bay and Surefers Paradise - I'm driving and Steve is navigating, so it could be divorce on the cards!!
Hope everyone is well and it isn't too cold back home ;o)
Bye for now - until our next installment
