Good Evening Everyone! Hope everyone is doing well!
I'm still having a wonderful time. Today I decided to do a little shopping in St. Ives. It was a really cloudy day but there were a lot of people out & about. I rode the bus which takes only a few minutes. Once there I just meandered my way down to the harbor, stopping in every shop that caught my interest. I saw lots of wonderful things. One shop had these large, enameled tile wall hangings that I really liked but I didn't want to have to try to get them back home in one piece. Besides, I don't think my suitcase will hold anything more. The handle broke the other day, so I can't add any poundage, either.
There were a lot of shops selling pasties but I wasn't hungry. You can get a pasty (pronounced PASS-tee) almost anywhere down here. Pasties were the original "hot pockets" that the tin miners took down into the mines. All your meat and vegetables (and sometimes, dessert) were folded into a crimped-edge crust and baked. They could keep your hands warm in your pocket, too. You wouldn't eat the crimped edge as that would be where you would hold it while eating it as your hands would have arsenic on them.
There were also a lot of candy shops in St. Ives. I did manage to purchase a little bit of toffee and some mints. The toffee is really delicious! It won't make it back to Kansas City. Then I found my new favorite shop, Cath Kidston. They had the most adorable items! I hemmed and hawed over this one bag and finally broke down and bought it. It will allow me to take home more stuff. LOL!
On the way back up the hill to the bus stop, I stopped in at the Oates Travel shop where I signed up for a day trip tomorrow to the Lost Gardens of Heligan. They will pick me up a few yards from my B&B in the morning, so that will work out very well.
I had to get back to my B&B to change clothes and get ready for my night at the Minack Theatre with Jo & Duncan. It was quite a ride to the theatre! So many roundabouts, twists, turns, hills & valleys! These roads are something else! Even though we got there plenty early, we still had to wait in line for the gates to open at 6:30. The clouds suddenly parted and the sun was shining brightly. It was another hour before the opening act started. But, wow! What an incredible view! You wouldn't really need a concert or show to go see there. You could just sit there and watch the waves crash over the rocks.
I went up to the concession area and bought a chicken pasty which was really, really good. They are a bit like a pot pie but without the gravy. And, the crust is somewhere in between a pie crust and a bread crust.
The opening act, Flats and Sharps, was a very talented group of young men that played bluegrass music. It was a bit surprising to hear bluegrass in Cornwall. But, it was really enjoyable. After their set and a brief intermission, the main act came out. They are the Fisherman's Friends, which is a 10-man singing group from Port Isaac that sing fishing & folk shanties. They have incredible harmonies and are very entertaining.
It was over all too soon but the last show of the evening was the beautiful crescent moon with a very bright Venus nearby. It was still a little bit light out even at 10 p.m. here. But, it was so cool to see that moon with nothing to obstruct your view. There is no light pollution down here, either. I wish I'd taken a photo, but didn't. I couldn't help but think about camping at the top of Trencrom Hill just to watch the stars and to see the sunrise. It would be incredible.
Well, it's late and I've got a long day tomorrow. I just realized, it's officially my birthday over here! I'll be celebrating with Jo & her family tomorrow night.
Good Night!
