Hello me again,
Just a wee update on our fun (extremly chilly) week in the snow. I havnt seen that much snow for ages even got to build a snowman, an igloo was a bit complicated.
Got ourselves all kitted out in wellies, super shiny ones at that, I've never felt so uncool. The Japanese didnt really seem phased by the snow, and insist on walking round in not very sensible clothes (and this coming from me?!!), the school girls go round in tiny skirts and bare legs, even saw one nutter in flipflops strange!!
So we stayed with our friend Dennise who's working on the JET teaching programme, in a little town called isurugi. Was a bit of a culture shock coming here from Tokyo, but nice to have a chilled out week. Visited Kanazawa a few times, which was the nearest 'city', and went to the Kenrokoen Park which was so beautiful in the snow, lots of waterfalls, fountains, bridges and amazing views of the mountains. The feet were starting to get numb even with three pairs of socks, so we stopped for a green tea in this little tea house, which was so cosy! we were served green tea with little japanese sweeties by a lady in a Kimono.
On our last day in Isurugi, we visited Dennise's high school to help her teach an english lesson to a group of kids planning a trip to America. Was really good experience for us, did some role plays with them and they were all very sweet. I couldnt believe how hard the school kids work here, this extra lesson was on a sunday and they were even groups of kids sat randomly sat in classrooms throughout the school without any teachers there. stopped to have a chat to some of them, the girls were chatty and asked us loads of questions in english. although I'm now a little wary of the teenage boys after one decided to say to me (in front of his teacher) 'Hi I'm fine' followed by....'I want you'. ARGH so embarassing!!! i suppose at least he was practising his english?!!
So we left Toyama yesterday and coached it here to Kyoto, Chris will update on our first impressions here soon...
bye for now, holly love love xxxx
