Day 1 in Fiji and it was pretty exciting to be back on the travels again! We arrived pretty clueless though, thinking we could just see all the islands in 2 weeks, well there's actually over 330 so we settled on around 8! We were dropped by a taxi on a beach by a hostel where we were told to wait for a boat to take us to our 1st stop. They said it'd be abotu an hour We waited for nealry 2 and soon realised this was to be our first experience of 'Fiji time'!
Mana was our first island, just below the Yasawa group. At £20 per night with 3 meals included, we were pretty content! We could walk around it in around 2 hours and the main beach, Sunset beach, was gorgeous. TWe spent one of the days playing ball games and digging holes in the sand with the local Fijian children which was really nice. There were also ots of English and Canadian travellers at the hostel who we soon made friends with and had a few good nights with them.
After 2 nights on Mana, we bought a 'Bula pass' which is a ticket which lets you island hop on the Yasawa Islands over 7 days. Beachcomber was our 2nd stop, and as it is know as the party island with a single dorm with 100 beds, we were expecting a pretty crazy night. And that's just what we got! Well what do you expect when you mix a rawdy bunch of Irish lads with a bar tab and drinking games?! So that was a messy night and by the next day we were ready for a bit of quiet! So we jumped on the boat in a less than healthy state and headed 5 hours north to Nabula Island. There we found a rustic little resort with no hot water and electricity only when it was dark! After a dinner of overcooked tuna steak (James' face was priceless as we were sooo hungry and he couldn't even put it in his month it looked so bad!!) we were then taught the 'Bula dance' along with all the other bewildered guests! We tehn snuck off to bed to wake up early to go snorkelling and explore the island a bit more. On the 5th day, we also went along to a little village where we were told we could buy jewellery and bits. So we warily ade our way through the woods and came to lots of little huts, where a little boy came up to us and took us to his mother's hut where she laid out her hand-made jewellery. Em bought a necklace and bracelet and James just bought some string for his pendant which he carved from a coconut shell back on Mana island.
Our next stop was Coral View where we met some really nice English people, which meant another heavy night! We loved the island but unfortunately it was a bit cloudy and rainy so we didn't get to see too much of it! It's amazing how the sun makes a place look nicer! Over the next few days we went down to White Sandy beach, Bounty Island (where Celebrity Love Island was filmed!) and then headed back to the mainland as our Bula Pass was finished! We had heard of a resort called Mango Bay down on the Coral Coast which was supposed to be really nice to so we thought we'd give that a try, and ended up staying there for a 4 last nights we had in Fiji! We met some really nice people there too, and played lots of volleyball, had midnight bonfires and Kava ceremonies. We also splashed out a whol 20pounds each and had a full body massage and scrub and facial for 2 hours!! Although we were convinced it took a layer of our tans off! Not that it matters, as we're now in Auckland, New Zealand and it's so cold the only bit of skin on show is our faces!! We loved, loved loved Fiji, but for anyone who is thinking of backpacking there, make sure you have enough money as it is at least triple the prices that we were paying in South America! Saying that, it was well worth it as the people, food and islands are completely unique and beautiful. A real 'once in a lifetime' place!
P.S. Our LA and Fiji photos aren't very good quality as we are having to use a disposable camera while we wait for our digital one to be repaired!
