I am currently in that state where I am waiting to move from one place to the next, I am still in Washington but I am just wasting time until the time comes to leave this hostel and embark on another Greyhound...adventure to my next destination.
Only 12 days of experiences left, but experiences that will last a lifetime. As much as I know I should savour this moments, make the most of every second, I can't wait to be flying home to that country I know and love. I never thought I would miss England and learn to appreciate it this much. I always felt bored at home, I'm sure I will feel that way when I return, despite days and weeks of anticipation. But once you leave that home, and all alone as well, you really learn to appreciate it for the qualities that invite other people, from the places I've been, to come and see my home. I especially miss my family, of course. All those hugs that are waiting for me at Terminal 5, Heathrow Airport. But less about the depressing part of my trip and more about the great Capitol of one of the world's best known countries.
Washington, D.C. is probably the smallest city I have been in, here in America. I have walked so much and seen so many museums that my body is drained, mentally and physically. The Smithsonian Institute is fascinating, the amount of artifacts and knowledge and all for free! I would definatley recommend the Air and Space museum, home to the original Wright Brothers plane; the American History Museum, home of the original star-spangled banner and the Museum of Natural History, home of every fossil, bone and animal you can think of, all in model form of course. Each exibit had something for everyone, children, adults, and so many amazing things to look at and even inspire. One disappointment of my trip here was that the reflection pool is undergoing maintenence, which meant instead of seeing the Washington monument with a great length of blue, glittering water infront of it, there was a great length of mud, infront of it. Ruins the experience just a touch. But the Lincoln memorial and all that jazz was still wonderful to see in person, and of course the tiny White House, with it's many protesters outside. The Holocaust museum was another that I was told I had to visit, as it would be an emotional journey. As moving and disturbing as it was, it didn't make me cry, but it certainly makes you ask questions as to how something so horrific could have ever been supported and carried-out.
My next stop is Atlanta, Georgia, their own state capitol. I am visiting a friend of a friend so I am looking forward to meeting someone my age that I can talk to and have a laugh with. Washington has definatley been educational and an experience. But my experiences of getting to each location has been just as educational. Realising how grateful I should be for each person at home who misses me and cares for me. This isn't my best blog, as I had so many more things in my head I wanted to share, but with New York approching soon, I'm sure I can write plenty more before I reach my final destination. Home.
