So I am sorry for the lack of photos so far, when shifts get busy, I get so distracted by what is happening that I forget to take photos... but I have lots of fun news to tell you all! :)
I have been trying to make the most of my experience while I am in the Philippines both in and out of the clinic, and so have been on a couple of excursions to the beach (saw some beautiful fish), went horse-riding this morning and tomorrow I am going scuba diving with a couple of the other interns that are here with me! I am so excited!
Today's shift was awesome- we had 4 labours/ births while I was there at the clinic, and two more were happening as I left. My frienc caught her first baby tonight and so I was able to assist in that birth. The following birth was incredible- a taxi arrived and all I heard was everyone rush outside.. I went outside in time to hear the baby make it's first cry and see my friend bending through the door of the taxi tending to mother and baby. As I was assisting and had just cut the cord of this little girl, another woman came into the clinic in labour and the supervisor called out my name saying it was time for me to catch my first baby!!! I was like- "Are you sure?" But she seem like she trusted me and so I took the woman in and took all her vitals (blood pressure, pulse, temp.,fundal height, etc) and then the supervisor did and IE and then let me also do my first IE- was not really sure what I was really feeling so I am now going to check out a good diagram!
So I knew I was not going to be able to catch my baby that night as it was already nearing the end of my shift and so I would have to pass over to the next load of midwives/ interns. But, at least I got to check-in a patient and know exactly what was expected etc. In fact, my patient did actually give birth while I was still there, her contractions were really strong and long by the end of the shift- but it was already into the next shift. So hopefully I will get to catch my first baby tomorrow night while on night shift- I will be with the same supervisor as was on today and she knows that I am ready etc!! WOOOOO!
So it is just amazing and I cannot believe all the things I am doing and learning!
