Phew! This morning was awesome! I am actually doing things that qualified midwives do! It is incredible. I went to my 2nd pre-natal clinic this morning where there were about 60 women waiting and I reviewed about 10 of them.
We call the women into a little cubicle and we do various checks on them including giving them nutrional advice etc. A lot of the women here really have no clue about nutrition or what a balanced diet is. They generally eat a whole plate of rice with about a spoon of veg or maybe some meat. So we advice them on a balanced diet. They also don't understand the importance of drinking enough water- each woman I asked whether she drank enough replied yes.. I then proceeded by asking how much- one woman replied that she drank one glass a day!
A number of results come back to us including Haemaglobin, urinalysis, blood type and so check the results and if any are abnormal, we might advise them to get the test again or to take some supplements. If there are too many P cells (pus cells) in their urine, we advie them on a clean catch- clean specimen of urine and how to obtain that etc.
We then ask them a number of questions about different symptoms and then do some checks- pulse, fetal heart rate, fundus height, position of baby (if they are fairly far into their pregnancy and we have a good chance of feeling the position), and finally we might give them a tetanus booster, So I was giving so many women injections today- so much fun!
There we go- I am on night shift tonight, so I had better get some rest in, although I feel really awake right now!
