Monday was a nice lazy start, with Stefan driving us to Jacob Riis Park next to the Rockaway’s. The whole beach front area has been redeveloped since Hurricane Sandy. We had plenty of choice when it came to parking and a place to put our towels down on the beach itself.
The beach itself was great as the sea breeze meant we were as cool as we had been since we arrived. After sunbathing for a while we all went for our first Splosh in the sea and boy was that cold when you first entered the water. So cold that Becky just observed Stefan and I in the water.
We grabbed lunch on the promenade where we were spoilt for choice for food outlets. Stefan & I opted for some tasty fishy options from the Clam company while Becky went for the cheeseburger. A stroll along the promenade took us to a hole in the wall bar serving slushy alcoholic drinks. Becky’s jack and Coke was particularly strong, my Gin wasn’t too bad.
Walking back along the beach this time to our spot, Becky was given quite the fright. ‘Giant’ birds littered the way, three of which were munching on crabs. Conquering her fear of the birds obviously instilled a new found confidence in her. Now she was able to join Stefan and I in the water for our next Splosh. We were in for quite a while enjoying the breeze and the cool water. For our final spot of sunbathing Becky and I nipped to the full on sports bar on the promenade. In full holiday mode I had a frozen pin-a colada, Becky opted for the frozen strawberry daiquiri.
The drive to and from the beach was a lovely journey through suburbia with quintessentially American homes and gardens.
Back in Prospect Park Becky and I nipped our for a couple of happy hour drinks. The first at a charming pizza bar/restaurant called barboncino. Our second stop was a regular haunt of mine called Union Street station. Where the $4 well drinks had a real bang for your buck.
We bought ingredients to make beef tacos back at the apartment. This was quite a team effort with Stefan making Moscow mules, Emily guacamole, & I made the beef under close supervision from Becky.
We all settled down for a night in front of the tele.
