So...we are finally in Hong Kong!
Last blog was from Hoi An so here goes...
We left Hoi An and got a VERY uncomfortable bus up to Hanoi where we met up with my friend from home and immediately went for a few bevvies....which ended up in Hannah going to bed at 6.30pm...good effort eh! Friday was spent recovering and having a very horrible English Breakfast. We pretty much just hung out and explored the Old Quarter of Hanoi the following day before getting an overnight train (actually comfortable) with Schof up to Sapa near the Chinese border. Really nice little mountain town which i managed to fall in love with pretty speedily. A chill in the air, free mulled wine at happy hour, pine trees and fairy lights -pretty christmassy really! Liv and Schof needed funds however andnone of the 3 ATMs in Sapa were working. So LUCKILY the hotel let them borrow some money (well actually offered it because they are lovely!). So the next day we went on a little countryside mountainous rambl. Absolutely awesome! went to a couple of villages along the way also. Our guide was so good and spoke awesome english. Pretyt much loved my time in Sapa an insane amount!
Then came our overnight train back to Hanoi. it was ok but when we got back i knew i wasnt feeling ok. Got back to the hostel and i proceeded to spend the next two days in bed. bar the 15+ time i got up within the first 6 hours to vomit. lovely. nice weightloss plan though! so tuesday and wednesday were write offs.
thursday we took a little boat trip in Halong Bay which was actually pretty awesome. We had a pretty good group on our boat which was good fun. a bit of sun on the first day was awesome. went for a little kayak around the island and through the caves...and liv and i got drenched...apparantly noone else liked our singing so they decided it was time to get water all over us. oh well. that evening most people got on the beers but as i had just got over that bug...i was on diet coke thinking it would be the clever way to go. not so. my stomach did not appreciate the saccharin overdose.
friday was pretty overcast for our trip back to the mainland which wasnt good but as most people were comfprting their hangovers, it really wasnt too big an issue! got back in Hanoi and meant to go see the Water Puppetry. got there. they were sold out until Sunday....an issue as we were going to fly to Hong Kong the next day. so had to say no to that after all :(
Saturday we flew to Hong Kong. a suprisingly good flight considering the shambles that is Hanoi airport. seriously. the amount of domestic AND international flights they have departing from that one airport is not good. its So small and overcrowded! anyway, got to Hong Kong...we were planning on meetingup with a friend from Australia who told us to stay atthe Chungking Mansions...so we got there...and it was a DIVE. so we tried to find somewhere else but nowhere else was in our price range so we have had to deal with it and stay at somewhere costly. word of advice...DO NOT STAY AT THE IMPERIAL HOTEL. it is SO expensive and definately not worth it. anyway, we met up with andy and went for sushi then got some sleep!
Sunday we had a wander around, a bit of a lie in also! then checked into the Ramada - much cheaper and actually better! went up the Peak at sunset....but had to queue for n hour for the tram so missed sunset but hey ho! The view of Hong Kong was AWESOME!
Today, we got up early and did the Avenue fo the stars (asias answer to the Hollywood walk of fame) then went and found Marks and Spencers (and Advent Calendars!), took a trip for some Dim Sum for Lunch, then went over to Lantau Island and saw the Giant Buddha (largest outdoor Buddha in the world), got the cable car back and now here we are - in the internet shop!
Heading to Africa tomorrow - WOOO! so doubt a blog will be posted until cape town if you are lucky!
muchos love!
