Well from what was going to be a day trip from Malaga ended up in 4 nights in La Línea de la Concepción which is the small Spanish town on the border of Gibraltar. This was part due to laziness, weather and sickness. My first issue was that to make a full day trip out of it I would have needed to catch a 7am bus from Malaga. When I failed that I decided to book a couple of nights in La Linea so that i could take a full day in Gibraltar without needing to worry about time. I was about to get a private room for just 13euro which was awesome.
I got there at about 3pm and probably could have spent some time in Gibraltar that afternoon, but I was stuffed (the travel sickness pills I currently have really knock me out). So I spent the rest of that day not doing much at all. Then the next day it was raining and the visibility of the rock was pretty much nil. You couldn't even see the top of it, so I figured it would be pointless to go up it on that day. So I booked another night.
The next day had great weather, so that's the day I went up the rock. I caught the cable car up, walked around a bit (quite a lot actually), took some photos of the view and some monkeys. There were some really nice views. On one side you could look over Gibraltar and back towards Spain. Another was the part of Spain off in the distance which goes further south. To the south you could see Morocco off in the distance. And to the east was the Alboran sea with no land in sight and dotted all over with ships. It looked awesome. After soaking in the views for a bit I tried walking to the southern peak, but it turned out you had to pay extra for that (there was some kinda museum type thing of the old WW2 guns up there. So I found some trail going down the rock around the south side which I spent a couple of hours walking hoping to reach the lighthouse at Europa point (completely wasting the fact that I had purchased a return ticket on the cable car). Turns out that was quite a bit further from the rock than I thought, so another hour or so of walking. By the time I reached Europa point I was b*****ed. There wasn't really a whole lot to see here anyway. A slightly closer look at Africa and a not so interesting lighthouse. It's not even close to being the most southern point of Europe which some sources seemed to claim (haven't they even looked at a map?). After this I caught the bus back into the centre of town and hit a proper English pub for some drinks and dinner.
I got an awesome Steak & Ale pie and some Old Speckled Hen Ale. Man was it good to have a nice ale again. Certain beers in certain countries throughout Europe are quite good, but they still don't match a good ale. Turns out that the pie wasn't as awesome as I originally thought that as I was sick that night. I think it had some undercooked meat or perhaps even contained some fish. Without going into too many details I didn't get much sleep due to throwing up every couple of hours. And the time between throwing up was agony. So I ended up staying yet another night to get over that. It was then back to Seville to fly out to Marrakesh.
