Well we're finally out of the mountains. We got some snow over the Crowsnest Pass but it was only a skiff. I would have preferred none at all but Bessie rose to the challenge and I had no problems. I didn't get any wind turbine pictures or anything from the Frank Slide because of the dreary weather. In fact, we were barely able to see the boulders on the sides of the highway when we drove through the slide area due to all the fog we encountered. We did see a bear though. Mum was the first person to see the cub on the side of the road and thought that it was a cat. The bear was nice enough to cross the highway behind our car - safely, I might add. I wasn't able to get any pictures though - so not safe enough to stop on the shoulder there.
By the time we got to Fort Macleod around lunch, the sun was trying to poke out from behind the clouds. We ate lunch in the Info Centre parking lot after having a necessary rest stop at our familiar Mac's store. Dad called us about a minute after we parked for lunch. I swear he's lojacked the car. He booked us in the Motel 6 in Medicine Hat for the night. It has a microwave in the room so we can reheat our pasta from Thursday night for dinner. The hotel has not let us down - it even has a LCD TV.
Today we drove through a bunch of world capitals - Sunflower capital is Burdett, AB; Taber is corn and Medicine Hat has the largest tepee. All in all an eventful day. We explored the area around the tepee when we first got to Medicine Hat, though I refused to go down the bluffs as that would have entailed walking back up. It was brutally windy - in part due to prairie winds and also due to it being on the top of a bluff. I ran into a bane of photographers - cleaners...they had the mini-lifts in to clean the tepee art. I did my best to reduce their prominence in the photos I took, but you can still see them. Hopefully I don't run into that too much on this trip. Mum and I walked around for almost an hour in the insane winds before we finally gave up and headed back to the car. We drove around the area for a bit, trying to get a magpie picture...oh well maybe, tomorrow. Then after some miguided directions, we finally made it to the hotel and the hotel is great. We've spent most of the evening watching TV and looking up stuff on wikipedia and IMDB.
Tomorrow Mum is driving. We've reached the prairies now so there shouldn't be any problem. This also gives me more of a chance to take photos. We are heading to Moose Jaw tomorrow. Mum is looking forward to a steak at this restaurant she likes and I hope to get some good pictures in the park downtown. I'm just glad we're out of the mountains...our next obstacle will be the flooding they've had in the prairies the last couple of days. It hasn't affected the Trans-Can so far - let's just hope it stays that way.
