It's still hard to believe this long program is really drawing towards it's end in some ways, but in others the wheels of time's swift chariot is certainly rattling and every day seems over before it's begun. Since last posting (Moora) I've seen Geraldton, Carnarvon, Karratha and Broome, and literally all points on the main highways in between. Sadly, the very same timetable doesn't allow for detours or exploring, so I'm following the white lines all the way.
After the bitter cold of Moora (5 degrees overnight) temperatures have steadily risen, then plateaued whilst the humidity has upped in response. Drove into Karratha enjoying 43 degrees, when I left on the Saturday the mercury sat at the same level by 10am.
By the looks of it a fast fire has run across much of the plains between Pardoo and Sandfire, leaving first one side of the road, then the other, then both, blackened and bare. Only shadows under the red rocks, and for the rest a heap of broken images indeed.
Not much wildlife as a whole - emus in the Gascoyne, one wedgie, and a parade of wallabies at dusk just after Sandfire- otherwise, nada in the obvious categories.
During the trip I've worked out there are some truly awful recordings of great books in Audio versions, some really ordinary songs side by side with good ones on various albums, and for the most part listened to things I haven't made time for in years - time well spent, and good preparation for a holiday! Still, in a lifetime, so many books, so little time - after this run I think I've done my share of talking, can I please spend the rest of my life with a continuing stream of good books?
Had some time to myself on Sunday so enjoyed a good lunch, a visit to Cable Beach and sunset at Gantheaume point. A few snaps in the blog albums, unfortunately a 'fuzzy spot' has appeared in the camera and is visible in most shots. Note to self - take both cameras in future .......
Tracey from Kununurra joined us at the Broome workshop as commitments will have her well out of the office for her local - tomorrow she drives back with me so between us we'll cover it in a day ( no camera stops I guess). First rains are coming through, but no road issues yet.
I've duly handed over the twinkly Prado in exchange for the soon to be retired Patrol- nice to have some space in a vehicle again. Most of my handouts are handed out, but now it's my gear and Tracey's, and her new big (thankfully boxed) Xmas tree that she had occasion to buy whilst here. Might stick a red nose on the front of the car and call us Rudolph :) I'd forgotten about the Xmas thing till she dragged me into the shops looking for various things not to be found in Kununurra, suddenly it's everywhere. When did that happen?
