Since the last update we've had very intermittent local phone service so no internet even by iphone - apologies to anyone sending in hope of a response.
Over the past days I've seen all the local border checkpoints, many and varied. Had to find myself an inspector's knife for a few inspection demonstrations- an interesting exercise as its apparently illegal to carry such weapons. Finally found a place carrying camping gear, at which point it was a normal request.
Also been to the commercial farms at Pandamatanga, where we ran a consultative workshop to identify biosecurity concerns as well as visiting properties to see things firsthand. Bill & Sonya are collecting bugs at any opportunity, and were very excited to trap a species of fruitfly they had only seen in photos before. Each to their own? I've been happy to secure some samples for them from border intercepts, identification of things like this isnt part of current practice so the local staff have been interested in our antics (or they are very polite).
We have possibly found one of the best Indian restaurants in the southern hemisphere here in Kasane, they also offer Chinese and Pizza but that doesnt seem to detract. They offer a lot of vegetarian options which is a big improvement on the standard toasted cheese & tomato sandwich for Sonya.
We have almost convinced ourselves that a regular sample of Amarula Cream as a nightcap is in the interests of research, as the marula fruit grow in the wild and are a fruitfly host......
Tomorrow I'm off to a Zimbabwe checkpoint about 200km south of here to finish my assessment of this district, Saturday is a trip to Victoria Falls and on Sunday we return to Gabarone.
