Not in HK right now, but failed to make a blog entry when I was there so doing some back tracking!
HK, upon reflection now that I'm in the mainland, has a lot to offer! The place is much cleaner, much more welcoming to tourists and English speaking, and of course are a more Westernised culture. Not that that's a good thing, but HK is certainly less depressing than China. For the four odd days that we stayed in Kowloon, we walked around lots of different markets, fruit, veg, trinkets and the obligitary fish markets where the fish are still (barely) alive and there are things like toads as well, should you want to dine on those.
Lots of dried fish and birds nest type shops all over, and the sky is hazey in a glow of neon lights. Tall buildings back the huge number of people in, and something we in the UK take for granted they just don't have here - space... they don't have their own gardens and have very little in the way of greenery. So much so that when we walked through Victoria Park on a Sunday it was packed with people sat on newspapers in groups, talking and eating, like that's what they did every Sunday because it was an open space in which to socialise. Strange.
The harbourfront has a bit more space and is alive with museums. The water is quite nice to see and the ferry across from one side to the other is a mere 17p on the lower ferry deck!
The free lazer show they put on at the harbourfront at 8pm every night was quite cool to watch, where they play music through a speaker system all round the harbour, and the tall buildings on either side of the water light up and shoot lasers in time with the music, quite cool.
Mailny ate noodle and rice dishes down cheap backstreets, as well as items from their numerous bakeries, which are suprisingly good. you can get a sausage in a roll for 20p for instance.
The big buddha in the pic we didn't go to see first time round as it's on another of the islands, but upon returning to HK we will do!
