Blog Day 120 Sat 3rd September
Clarke Quay & Boat trip!
This morning we treat ourselves to a little lie in, once up and ready we head back down to Orchard Road for a wander round. As it's a Saturday the place is so busy and it doesn't take long before we have had enough of a crowds.
We still have another day left on our bus ticket so after a bite to eat, we take advantage of this and catch the bus round to Clarke Quay. This area is full of restaurants and like Orchard Road it's buzzing. The sightseeing ticket that we purchased included a boat ride along the river and out into the bay. So this is what we plan to do from here. This would have been a smooth operation had we not left our tickets and a bunch of information leaflets on the bus! Our next task was to try and convince the guy issuing the boat tickets that we had already booked one. After looking on the system and not finding any evidence that we had, he reluctantly booked us onto the next boat.
The boat ride around the bay offered some fantastic views and photo opportunities of the city and all the major landmarks. We asked an elderly Ozzy bloke if he would take a photo of us with the city in the background. 'Sure thing!' he says and takes the camera from us. Holding it up to his eye as if it was some kind of vintage contraption, he tells us to smile, pushes the button and takes a picture of his own eyeball! Maybe this was too much of a task for him. The poor guy even handed the camera back to us to see if we approved of the photo!! Sometimes you just can't help but laugh!
Now we were under the opinion that we could get off the boat at a few different places but as the boat docks back at Clark Quay we find that this is not the case. The only place we could have got off was at the esplanade, so we managed to blend in with another group who were heading out on the next boat. After more pictures and views we get off at the esplanade. Here we chill out for an hour or so before a laser show beams out over the bay from the Marina Bay Sands Resort. It's pretty spectacular and once it's finished we catch the end of a free concert happening at the esplanade. The guy singing has got a fantastic voice, and we are gutted that we only caught the end of the show.
We then take a stroll back to Clarke Quay where there is allsorts going on. Street entertainers, singing competitions and people generally soaking up the atmosphere. One performer in particular that caught our eye was a harmless old fella throwing some serious shapes to some pretty heavy Ibiza Anthems. It was so funny because this old boy wouldn't have looked out of place in a monks outfit, praying in a mountain side temple somewhere. And what made it even funnier was that his ever supporting wife was sat on a fold out picnic chair, complete with thermal flask and sour expression, keeping a watchful eye on his tip jar.
Along the Quay there is every possible restaurant and bar you could imagine serving whatever food you want. We even saw a bar called The Clinic, where you sit at your table in a wheelchair and drink cocktails from a medical drip. This area is a little out of our budget though and after taking in the sights and sounds we retreat back to the hotel for the rest of the night.
