Blog Day 118 Thurs 1st September 2011
So we got a little bit of sleep last night but the hostel didn't include bed sheets so with the air con on full blast it was pretty cold. Being in a dorm also gives us a sharp wakeup call as some people come in drunk at all hours & get up really early to pack (the rustling of a plastic bag, the sound of chit chat & a door keep slamming are more effective than any alarm). So as we are up we grab our bags & check out. Last night we managed to book ourselves in a hotel using Agoda which we have found really useful for travelling around Thailand. It's a website that you can book hotels, guesthouses & sometimes hostels through & most of the time there are some really good deals to be had, cheaper than hostels in some cases & Double rooms. We call a cab & get straight to the hotel 88 (Palace). It's just gone 9am but they have a room free & check us in early which is really kind of them. The room is very nice though Singapore is defiantly more expensive than we bargained for. After this we head to the metro station, which is around a 10 minute walk away. The metro is the best way to get around Singapore & is really cheap too. The first place we actually head to is the Cathay shopping centre only because Dan has a magic book on order with one of the Magic shops here. Everything seemed to be shut so we headed over to another mall for a bite to eat and then took a wander back a bit later. Dan was really excited as this particular shop was advertised as the biggest magic shop in Singapore. Once we got there we were a little disappointed, the shop was quite small & the greeting wasn't as good as we'd hoped.
Usually when you enter a magic shop you expect some kind of display of well…Magic, to be honest the guy looks bored. This doesn't stop Dan having a look around though & an hour or so later after the guy reluctantly showed us a couple of tricks & Dan showed him a couple of his a parcel arrives containing the book that Dan had ordered, good timing too as this means we don't have to come back. Money & goods are exchanged & we leave & head back to the other shopping mall for a wander. This little wander sees us come across another magic stall. They guys here are a lot more welcoming and we stop here for a little while before heading down the famous Orchard Road (shopping heaven for anyone who has money to burn!). Along this road we find a tourist information centre, bit hard to miss as the whole front of the building is one big sign saying TOURIST INFORMATION CENTER. We pop in to get a map & some info about the best way to get around, we pretty much know what we want to do while we are here & as the lovely Hayley spent 3 months here a while back we have a list of must do's. We decide the best way to get around & see most things is to book onto the city sightseeing bus which includes a boat tour around Clarke Quay. This is also a way that we got about in Cape Town for a couple of days so it's pretty cool to do the same thing here. We book tickets for the following day & catch the metro back to the hotel for a Pot noodle.
