Another early start (I don't thinkw we'll be getting any late ones to be honest.) But that's how we're hoping to carry on so that we can see as much as possible- there is so much to see after all.
We walked to get some breakfast together and, as per usual, walked probably further than was necessary. But we found a place called "Hot & Crusty" which prompted some immature (and probably fatigue-induced) sniggering from us. And had purple bagels and fruit juice for our brekkie- yes, purple bagels... They were blueberry but the berries were all smooshed so it made the bagels purple. Very cool, you know what they say, simple things...
We organised our helicopter ride for the afternoon- difficult as the hostel's payphones won't work so we had to keep trying payphones on the streets, most of which didn't work. But it got organised all the same- hurrah!
On a high from something going right, we took the subway to Midtown, the setting for our touristy ways for the day. We saw as many of the sites as we could and, again, probably walked further than was truly necessary... But oh well, it was worth it. Saw Times Square in the morning (Biggest advertising ever) and then went to Radio City Music Hall and MOMA- which had a queue forming round the block. It was also pretty pricey so we didn't chance it. Looked cool though, maybe next time... Then we walked past the Rockafellar Centre and found St. Patrick's Cathedral- where the Pope had been only days before. The building is stunning and it's just slotted in between all these sky-scrapers and stuff. Amazing. Opposite the Cathedral is the NBA shop, where I took Dan to get his promised birthday present. It was like watching a kid at Christmas. I can't get over how cheap everything is though- it makes me feel a little bad for being English, people keep commenting on how we have "2 for 1" on everything and it's true... Everything looks like it's the same price in dollars as it would be in pounds. I feel bad handing over my money and saving 50% on everything I buy!
But shopping out of the way, we also saw the Chrysler Building, and Waldorf Astoria (little bit of Serendipity for those of you who like a girly film) Sacks 5th Ave, The Empire State Building (from the ground, we're being cheap!) and Grand Central Station where we had lunch.
I love Grand Central Station. It is beautiful, so ornate and yet so grand. The ceiling, which you can't see in that famous photo, is a light turquoise with the signs of the zodiac on it. Amazing, I loved it. There's also a huge police/army presence there which does make you feel safe. Couldn't believe it- we saw a sign for Platform 117! How can a station have 117 platforms and it still not be the only one in the city? Crazy. We had lunch downstairs in the station- had a slice each from "Two Boots to go-go" which was yummy. The eating area's also beautifully restored. There was an exhibition of 1950's photos from the station around as well, they were gorgeous, I wanted to buy prints but don't think you can.
Walked through Theatre World- there's a lot on that I would have liked to see but this time round we've got to keep it cheap and keep moving so we've put it on the list for next time (it's a list that just keeps growing!)
Took the subway to Wallstreet and walked to the Pier for our helicopter ride. Now, I know this was expensive but it is also SO worth it. I would highly reccommend it- even just the shortest one that we went on. The views of the city are phenomenal! I was in the front so got a truly awesome view. We saw Ellis Island, the Statue of Liberty (close up!) and the skyline, as well as the Brooklyn and Manhattan Bridges. Once I got over the flying part it was really amazing, if you ever come to NY, go on a helicopter ride. Wow. Just, wow.
Then we had dinner in Times Square and saw it in the dark which is even more impressive than during the day. The signs are so light you'd swear it was day time. But, there was a wierd guy with a snake round his neck just walking around so I kept running away from him... But otherwise it was very cool.
Back at the hostel and there was no one in our room! Although we now have a roomate (he arrived really, really late last night) he kept me up with his snoring and we have an early start cos we're going to Redbank New Jersey today for Kevin Smith day (!!!) so I am not in the most refreshed of mood. Hense the brief blog update. I promise to update again soon though, hopefully more thoroughly!
So, update to come on our Day Of All Things Kevin Smith to come...
