Masaka District, Uganda
1 week in Masaka.
Hey all, im in an internet cafe in Masaka town at the moment - the internet at the house hardly ever works, and even here it took 20 minutes to get to this page!
Basically, im living with the family who run the charity. Most of them dont speak english, so im slowly learning Lugandan - the local dialect. Today I was visiting a couple of kids from the orphanage at the hospital, and changed my 1st diaper! One girl has tb, the other a broken arm. After a week of being in hospital, waiting for swelling to go down, we finally got the doctor to put a cast on emma's arm.
This is typical of 'africa time' - everything takes 10 times longer than expected. If someone says theres a meetng at 7, il get there for 8 and still be an hour early.
The charity itself, whilst doing a lot of good work, is hideously unorganised. So this is where i feel like im going to make the biggest difference. The last couple of nights Iv been working with the 'directors' (to flatter them) on making a new organisational stucture on decision-making, because at the moment theres no way to resolve disputes between the american, canadian, and ugandan parts, all of whom currently have equal input on policy.
The next project is to help them set long and short-term goals for each project, then we can do budgeting and prioritising.
Gna have to go now as my 30 mins is almost up. next time will get an hour!
Basically its all good here, different, but not that difficult to adjust.
Best wishes to all
Conor
