Peaceful bird walk this morning on one of the hills near Colțești, then a climb to the remnants of the fortress. A decree in the 13th century obliged every landowner to build a fortress so as not to be as vulnerable as during the Tatar invasion (1241). The fortresses needed to be within view of their neighbors; they literally used smoke signals as a warning system for impending invasion.
