Two days of exploring around Canastra National Park, staying at two locations near the park. Monday, hiked back to a beautiful waterfall. We're not seeing large quantities of birds at this point in the trip, but concentrating on quality species. Marcelo is a master at knowing where to find a bird, position us, tease out one that is shy and elusive.
Tuesday we took four-wheel drive vehicles in order to climb atop the plateau, passing the source of the Sao Francisco river, which leads to the waterfall we hiked to yesterday. An expansive grassland area (cerrada, like what we were in at Emas NP), there have been wildfires in parts of the park for the past four days. We have seen the blackened, smoking hillsides from afar, but today the flames lapped at grasss not that far from us. Marcelo says that within three to four days the wildflowers will cover the blackened earth. Today was clear and sunny; being so high up with no tall trees, the temperature rose to about 90 in the tiny bit of shade we huddled under for a picnic lunch near the rocky pools at the top of the waterfall. Travel on the dusty, bumpy roads, stopping for small grassland birds made for a long, hot afternoon.

Tracey Awesome picture of the two of you with the falls. True birders with those heavy duty binocs. Hope you are still having fun and are feeling well. Thanks for continuing to share.
