Charlie and Rebes: Brit's Abroad
Death seemed like an attractive option whilst climbing the Great Wall of China. We had to wake up in the middle of the night aka 7 AM and still managed to hold up our group. Spending 3 hours in sleepy misery, realising how little music I really have on my MP3, we got the bus to the Wall not anticipating the hell that lay ahead. My "broken" foot and Rebes broken back did not appreciate the first flat 10 minute walk to the Wall from the bus and even less the death defying 6 hours that followed. We now understand why the t-shirts (that at the beginning we refused to see why anyone would buy - by the end we were wearing our t-shirts with pride) say 'climbing' rather than 'walking' the Great -pain in the ass- Wall.
Being the youngest in our group and therefore 'in our prime' we cockily rushed off at the beginning and shouted back to the Scottish guys 'Come on you ladies!!'. This was to come back and haunt us when we were turning up at least 10 minutes after everyone else at all the check towers. When falling off the sides of the wall was becoming less of a fear and more of a fantasy we knew that this was a day we would be proud of if we did in fact make it through. And after literal hands and knees climbing and feeling the life being sucked out of us we did in fact complete the 15km of the wall if not in a graceful way. The main image getting us through was the thought that later that day we would be downing our beers and cheering on our country.
PS We know we aren't technically in Mongolia but the other side of the wall was.
