We arrived in Singapore at about 10pm and checked into a Hostel. Pete was not feeling well so went to bed so I thought I would take a wander…. Don’t know why but I liked Singapore immediately, it was just one of those places that you get a really good feeling about straight away!!! I wandered around for about 3 hours just soaking up this 24hr city before heading back…
The following day we had arranged to meet up with Dom. Dom is the brother of a good friend of mine (Phil) from Citrix and he had kindly agreed to sort me and Pete out by letting us crash at his place for a few days…. So while we were in the famous Raffles Hotel enjoying our Singapore Sling I get a call from Dom saying that he has emailed me the codes to his apartment and he would leave the front door unlocked as he would be out when we arrived. What a legend!! He also added ‘feel free to use the pool and make yourselves at home’ , lets just say we were smiling!!!
This was great, after spending so long in crappy hostels and guesthouses it was so cool to be in an actual home. Especially the home of a mid twenties guy living the ex-pat lifestyle in Singapore (e.g. massive swimming pool, tennis courts and squash courts) After dumping all our stuff at Dom’s we headed out to Boat Quay to meet Dom and his mates. This was a cool evening as we got to sit outside on a warm evening with the skyscrapers of Singapore on one side and the England rugby match on the other.. it was also really cool to sit with a load of cool English lads and just watch some sport and sink some beers!!!
The following day was Saturday so we were ready to go out and see what Singapore had to offer…. The night started at Dom’s with some straight scotch… nice!!! Then onwards to the bar area where we were reminded exactly what plush bars look like… I am sure we didn’t look the part in our walking shoes (we only have walking shoes or flip flops) but who cares… Several beers and a few shots of tequila later we were on the move again and now headed for a club… in the club we met up with a few more of Dom’s friends and a couple of attractive Singaporean girls… we all embarrassed ourselves on the dance floor as per normal and before we know it, it was five in the morning!!!!
The next day Pete and I made our way over to Sentosa Island to check out some of the local attractions... This was all cool enough but it did feel a bit contrived, the main thing of interest was the dolphin show which was really well done!!! After that we headed across town to Singapore Zoo, this was great as we managed to coinside with feeding time (the animals, not ours) so we were able to see some of the lions and Jaguars going nuts trying to get all the food.... The chimps were also pretty cool to watch.. The zoo was really well laid out and had some really exotic animals there. The thing that made it really good was the fact that they avoid the use of cages wherever possible so that all that stands between you and a siberian Tiger is a ditch and some electical wire. A must for any visit to Singapour...
That night was our last night as we were only in Singapour for a very short time... The three of us went to one of the hawker centers that we had heard so much about. A hawker center is essentially a type of massive food court where all the food stalls are basically fighting for your business. Sounds annoying but it actually seems to work. One of the really awsome things about these hawker centers and about Singapore in general is the amazing standard of the food. I really cant emphasis enough just how good it is. From chilly crab and king prawns to rise and Indian dishes everything is absolutly superb!! I think that Singapore was quite possibly the best places for food we have been so far! (with China up there as well). After we left the hawker center Dom took us to some of the more impressive of Singapore's bars.. As per usual we felt a little under dressed on our walking shoes but again, we dont really care!! The bars 60 and 70 floors up gave an awsome view over Sinapre and was a really nice was to end our short time here!!
The next morning we set off for the airport headed for Bail in Indonesia.. Indonesia was to be our last port of call in Asia before we left for Oz so we were determined to finish off in style...
