So sorry that it's been so long since I last wrote - things have been pretty busy and I don't have regular access to the internet. Not sure where to begin and i'm sure i'll forget lots that's happened but here goes...
I've been assigned to a Grade R class at the primary school so the kids are 4.5-5yrs old. They are adorable but also a handful! I'm hopefully going to spend some time with Grade 1 and 2 as well before I leave as that will involve more teaching on my part. I finish at school not long after midday so i have my afternoons free, which is a nice.
I'm trying to think of everything i've done in the last month... i'll have to summarise:
Stellenbosch - We went on a weekend trip to Stellenbosch for the wine tour. It was really nice, if slightly marred by the fact we were all feeling fragile from the night before. We went to 4 different wineries and also to a cheese tasting - yummy! we bought 3 bottles of wine for R50, so just over a pound a bottle.
Cape Point, Cape of Good Hope, Boulders Beach - we took a day trip round the coast. Boulders beach is known as the penguin beach because there are hundreds of penguins there - so cute. it poured with rain while we were there but brightened up in the afternoon when we walked to the point. it is the most beautiful place! i saw an ostrich.
Botanical Gardens in Kirstenbosch - stunning. Views across Cape Town are breathtaking.
Bo-Kaap - area of Cape Town known for its brightly painted houses, often seen on postcards. we ate at a little hilltop restaurant with views of Table Mountain.
We planned on hiking Table Mountain last weekend but it was closed due to the weather. It has its own little climate so even though the weather was fine downtown, it was really cloudy there. hoping to do it one day soon... Going to Robben Island on Sunday, i think, which i'm looking forward to (have just started reading 'Long Walk to Freedom').
I booked my trip to Kruger National Park the other day. Me and two other girls are flying to Jo'Burg on 20th May then leaving the next day to spend 3 nights in Kruger before heading back to Jo'Burg and then home, well, cape town. we're staying in a hut there. fingers crossed that the weather is good because it's winter here soon. i'm so excited! safari!
Aside from sightseeing, I have two new housemates, Pernille and James. Both are really nice and there's 5 of us in total now, soon to be 6. It's nice having a busy house :) my host family are lovely, as ever, and i can't imagine not living with them.
hmmm... what else... oh, i fell over on Monday night and cut my knee... not a good move. I'd like to blame the pavement but i think it was the vodka and orange :p
i'm eating so much here. south african families are all about eating and Lecia (host mum) is always saying "eat your foooood"! i still have almost 2 months left here so im not sure how much longer my jeans will fit!
anyway, i hope everyone is well. I'll try and update this sooner next time.
