New York City
Saying our goodbyes to DC, we hit the road and found the only state park with availability for camping close enough to NYC, enter Cheesequake State Park. The weekend we chose to explore the Big Apple was Gay Pride, suffice to say the oakes with the pink dollar had booked up all the motels / hotels / B&B's / sauna's & bathhouse's so these happy travellers were forced to stay Jersey side….
NY was everything we expected it to be. Just awesome seeing all the tourist sights - must be amazing to live there! We walked the place stukkend, in the pouring rain. Am sure we are the minorities who have toured NYC in flash floods…? We had to dash under a toilet roof in Central Park in order to stay afloat… Anyhow, it did not detract from the awesomeness of the City. We will defs go back one day to see its splendor in the dry….
Day 2 took us to the French coppered beast that is the Statue of Liberty. We drove through Staten Island to the ferry terminal on the Jersey side. Clever d*** as the queues were so much shorter than the NY side! Sadly we weren't able to go up into her crown but climbed up into the pedestal, which afforded us the most spectacular views across NY harbor. The museum was fascinating - we didn't realize just how much time/effort/money went into the monument. It was an interesting day learning all the facts about what the statue represents - a great piece of American/French history. Big Apple done - next time we're Mastercard-ing it and checking into the Ritz-Carlton….
