Sabaidee! (Hello in Laos)
Probably the only new word we have learnt and remembered from our trip so far
Flew into our third country (time is flying!) Luang Prabang (Laos) yesterday. Happy birthday Mum!
Only a short flight and a 15 minute taxi to our hotel - nice to not have to sit on a bus for 14 hours.
Laos is very pretty! Also much less busy than Vietnam and no one hassling you for a bike, taxi or massage as you walk along the streets.
Unfortunately twice as expensive though.. £1.50 for a smoothie/£2-7 a meal...
Our first day was spent exploring Luang Prabang - we are staying central which is handy and a big room with 2 double beds!
We arrived a few hours before sunset and had been told by our host that there is a nice sunset if you climb the Mount Phousi hill - nearly opposite where we are staying. Decided to give this a go, however 5 minutes in and half way up, we were told we had to pay 40,000 (£4) and that the sun would set in 20 minutes. We were quite hot as had climbed a lot of stairs by this point, so decided to continue our journey to the top. Just as we arrived the sun was setting but as usual, the place was full of tourists so not worth the £4. Something to tick off the bucket list though.
Had a delicious pad Thai for dins at the bamboo restaurant, who also had some very sweet little puppies for us to stroke.
The night market is also famous here and a 10 minute walk away. Took us about 30 minutes to walk one way down it as it’s very long! But much better stuff being sold than other markets we’ve been too.
Today we visited the famous Kuang Si waterfall. We decided to take the tuk tuk route as you are only given 2 hours there if you take the bus. We bartered with a tuk tuk man and enjoyed our one hour journey on the bumpy roads (minus the butterflies and grasshoppers flying in).
Rest of the day was spent eating, drinking smoothies and watching a film showing in an upstairs French cafe opposite our place. The film (fisherman’s friends - 2019) was brilliant - a must watch for all the oldies reading this.
Got there a bit late though so got stuck sitting on a hard bench
We have done lots of travelling recently in Vietnam and want a break from it so have decided to avoid the 25 hour bus journey down south to 4000 islands and just hang here for a few more days. We shall then depart on a 2 day slow boat to Thailand!
Hopefully we will save some money doing nothing for a few days as over our budget the past 2 days due to an expensive flight :(
