Today we explored Krakow. It was a miserable morning however because the weather was rainy and overcast (mind you it's the first day of bad weather we have had this whole trip) and many of us were hungover from the night before. While many didn't even make the bus in the morning, I was up and ready to cram my day with lots of sites. I started by walking to the Jewish quarter in the rain. There I had coffee with some others while we waited for the rain to subside. We then went to check out the oldest synagogue in Poland. Not knowing much about the Jewish faith it was interest to observe their house of prayer and the types of ceremonies that go on. We then caught a street taxi to Schindlers factory where thousands of Jews were saved after being given jobs there. The factory is now a museum however, which focuses more on the treatment of Jews in Poland during the Second World War more than the actual story of Schindler and his factory - which was a little disappointing but still very interesting and confronting. After this we caught a taxi back to the main square for lunch. There I had periogi dumplings - another polish delicacy which contain various fillings including meat, cheese and potato and onion and mushroom. Apparently in the olden days, the type of filling that you could afford symbolised your social status. After this I wasn't feeling too well (my night was starting to catch up to me) so I strolled around the markets for about 5 minutes before needing to sit down. If there was any part of the day to feel sick and have to sit down, I'm sure I chose the right time, for just as I sat down more street performers gathered and started performing music and dance in front of me. Then when I was feeling better I visited the church of St Mary which is probably my favourite church so far. The church was very ornate and has the largest alter piece of its kind which is believed to have taken eleven years to carve and construct. With only an hour to go, I then walked to the castle where I walked around the grounds and admired the flower gardens. I then got ice cream and met everyone back at the bus. That night we had dinner at 7:30 in the hotel and went to bed at 8:30. It's the earliest night we've had the whole trip and it was awesome.
